Existential comedies

This is one of my favourite movie genres. Something that can make you laugh at the bleakest absurdities of life. Any recommendations?

I don't know if you seen them already or they are what you are looking for.
  1. Joe Versus the Volcano (1990)
  2. What About Bob? (991)
  3. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1990)
  4. Groundhog Day (1993)
  5. The Truman Show (1998)
  6. Being John Malkovich (1999)
  7. Drowning Mona (2000)
  8. Lost in Translation (2003)
  9. The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
  10. Stranger than Fiction (2006)

I've seen the bolded ones and I feel like I've seen Rosencratz but can't remember it. I should watch Eternal Sunshine again too because that's a pretty faded memory :)

Being John Malkovitch has long been a favourite. Great movie.

Have you seen Better off Dead and Heathers?

Goofle 03-31-2017 06:40 AM

Withnail & I kinda has that quality.

Pretty sure I've seen these although I don't remember much of Better Off Dead.

the quintessential existential comedy

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Contemplating Existence

The Bothersome Man (criminally underrated--one of the best depictions of someone getting repeatedly hit by trains I've ever seen)

The Lobster

I also second Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead. I watched it pretty close to when I finished Hamlet and about died laughing. Made me appreciate both works a lot more as well.

Watching that right now actually. Reminds me a little of Bunuel.

Seen this one but it's on Netflix so think I'll watch it again.

Just finished this one. Enjoyed its meandering through the human condition. I realised I've seen the director's Songs From the Second Floor a while ago.

Never heard of this one. Will keep an eye out.

This one sounds interesting. Hopefully have it at the local video store.

Klown ( In danish klovn) It is a Danish comedy TV show that they based a few movies on ( Klown forever was quite good. )If you watch a few seasons of the TV show, you really understand the dynamics between the main characters alot better . Really funny. The main character was in game of thrones and the guy who plays Jamie lannister in got is in the movie..showed up a few times in the show as well if I remember right.

Bad Boy Bubby
Dogtooth
Borgmann
Visitor Q
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover
The Cremator

Although some might argue those are a bit too horryfing to really be considered comedies.

The Bucket List (2007)
Slipstream (2007)
Garden State (2004)
About Schmidt (2002)
50/50 (2011)

Andersson's commercials are incredible. Studio24Sto has several comps on YT; here's a taste.

Ha yeah they were good.

Psy-Fi 04-03-2017 12:29 AM

Four that I immediately thought of. The last one is what I would call a dark comedy.

Seen that one too. Enjoyed it but don't feel the need to see it again.

Hmm I read the book but for some reason never got around to the movie. Might see if I can get it. Don't like my chances though, the local video store is pretty crap.

That one sounds interesting. Will try and find that one too.

I ADORE Harold & Maude. Need to rewatch it.

Bernie is one that I never seem to see mentioned anywhere, but it's delightful in every way.

The actors who played the kooky east Texas characters were fantastic.

Also:

I'm a Cyborg But That's OK (2006)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ilm_poster.jpg

The House of Yes (1997)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...Houseofyes.jpg

And I've seen a number of mumbly existential indie comedies on Netflix but most were forgettable. Can't recommend them.

I'm tempted to mention the Angels in America mini-series (based on the play of the same name) though it's not quite a comedy.

grindy 04-03-2017 12:10 PM

Yeah, Bernie is pretty great.
