Default The Strange Thing About the Johnsons

I felt like this needed it's own thread so we can break it down and have a thorough discussion about it after it has been seen. If anyone dares to partake.

Done.

Spoiler for ...:
It's about time they made black people as ****ed up as white people. I'll wait for others to watch it before I really say anything, but that's my kinda drama even if it was incredibly predictable

Thanks for sharing DJ.

Watched the first minute or so cause I am on my break (assumed it was gonna be a trailer) and it... I wasn't expecting that start. I'll watch when I get home.

Awww it got taken down for the content. I guess whoever uploaded it didn't age gate it.

Anyways I'll talk a little bit about it in spoilers.

Spoiler for Ah Ha!:
What was predictable about it? Also I ended up finding out that the creator/director was a white guy not that it makes a difference but just putting that out there. So yeah, I think it does a good job of showing how ****ed up black people are in real life that doesn't get talked about much. It touches on male rape, incest, a hint of mental illness and these subjects are still taboo to this day within the black community.

Especially the mental illness piece, I know I'm going to jump into generalizations but generally in the black community mental illness gets pushed aside and you get shunned for having a mental illness while in certain white communities going to therapy and getting put on medication for different mental illnesses happen so young in their lives that it is a bit more normalized than in black communities. The solution for mental illness in black communities is just to pray more and let God handle it which is dangerous when people may actually need to be seen by a professional and might need to be prescribed something. As I'm typing this I notice the scary parallel to Scientology in that aspect of how they view mental illness. It's slightly different but they have the same stigma attached where it's something that will just pass over you in time as long as you have faith.

If you still haven't seen it and would like to add to the discussion after watching I'm going to edit OP with another link.

It's a shame more people haven't checked this out.. I think it would make for some interesting discussion.

Spoiler for @DJ:
So, it was predictable because after I saw the name and the opening scene was over I had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen. Like, I didn't know he was going to get married, but when his mother was looking for him I kinda figured he was fooling around with his dad. Before they revealed what he was jerking off to I just thought it was going to be a guy and some sort of gay commentary. That part really took me for a spin.

The black stereotypes you mentioned are something I've heard before, but I really don't know enough black people to have anecdotal evidence of it.

The most fucked up part for me was when he raped him in the tub, and the mother just turned up the volume on the tv.. It did a really great job of portraying a family in such a fucked situation you don't even know what to do to. It makes me wonder if there are people going through that same situation. It's pretty over the top, but totally believable. I can sit here saying I'd do this or I'd have done that, but I'm not a parent. It seems like an impossible situation.
