Favourite Fawlty Towers quotes or scenes?
Guest: "Do you know anywhere that serves good French food?"
Basil: "Yes, France, I believe. If you hurry you can just catch the tide. The swim should certainly sharpen your appetite!" |
inb4 someone mentions the war.

Hello, Fawlty titties.

Massive confession: I've not seen a frame of either Blackadder nor Fawlty Towers.
What's the best course of action? Binge both series in their entirety? |

You have GOT to see Fawlty Towers! It's THE classic sitcom! Yes, my advice is binge from episode one (there are only twelve episodes) and you will be finished in no time, your sides aching and wishing there was more. As for Black Adder, that's a little different. The Black Adder (the first series) is funny without much real rudeness. Edmund, the main character, the Black Adder, is a simpleton but thinks he's cool and the comedy comes from there. It's set in about the twelfth century, around the War of the Roses. Blackadder II was when Ben Elton came on board, and immediately from episode one you can see a move more to the slightly smutty laughs - knob jokes etc. Edmund is now a cunning rogue. This is set in Elizabethan England. Blackadder The Third is more of the same, but set in the reign of King George III. Blackadder Goes Forth takes places in World War One. There are some great supporting players - Steven Fry, Hugh Laurie, Miranda Richardson - with guest stars like Rik Mayall, Tom Baker and Ade Edmonson popping up too. Very British humour, eminently quotable and I think you would really enjoy it. It does follow a historical narrative, but that's not to say you can't watch the series out of order, as the one does not follow on from the other, ie nothing is mentioned in say series two that happened in series one etc; they're each pretty much self-contained. But if you want to see the evolution of Rowan Atikinson's character (to say nothing of Baldric, played by Tony Robinson, though this is more a devolution in his case!) then I would watch them in sequence, but be prepared for the shift towards toilet humour after the relatively tame first series. |

As for Blackadder, you had me at Fry and Laurie (a bit of which I ALSO need to commit myself to screening). Thanks again! |

Somebody's just a teeny bit jealous, huh? ;)

It's Ghost in the Shell! I'd give your sister's left nut to watch Ghost in the Shell for the first time, in a theater, tonight!

The fact that she's back to our previous year's routine of not contributing a cent toward our living expenses isn't what bugs me. The real bummer is not being able to attend Ghost in the Shell so that I can frustrate the hell out of Batty on the morrow. Curses. |

Or fly to (where is it you live again ISB?) and buy the tickets from him. Or just punch him and take them, which is more your style, Batty.
|
I don't actually have any tickets to the show, cretin.

As a next-best plan, I'm inviting our mutual friend who proposed the outing over for a home screening this weekend. My speakers can certainly match the theatre experience. We'll just have to settle for the comfort of home. Batty - if you were here, I'd man-date with you to see it on the big screen. I'd even buy you candy and popcorn. |

Edit: oh and of course this :) (spoiler alert) |

But you have an entire world of anime nerdistry to explore if you've only just discovered Ghost in the Shell. If I were you I'd ask my friend if he wants to turn GotS into a double feature with Akira. Any anime nerd who wouldn't want to watch both movies in a quasi-theater environment isn't worth the title. After that then you absolutely, completely, and utterly must watch everything made by Hayao Miyazaki. He's pretty much the closest analogue to Walt Disney you will ever find, Japanese or otherwise. He is a ****ing genius of ridiculous proportions. |

I'll schedule a weekly flick with our friend - I'm sure he'd be delighted to take part. Thanks! |
