Her writing style is honestly pretty great, very vivid. Her storytelling and preachiness is not great.

I definitely need a copy of Solaris in English. I'll have to look up how early on that was translated. I know the Russian novel, We took several decades.

And regarding Frankenstein, my copy sports what is perhaps the least appropriate cover artwork of any edition I've found. Did they even read the damn thing?
Don't get me wrong. I like the universe. I just can't get through the writing style.

You should read it. "Children's book" is a pretty inaccurate term. Not to say it's violent, just too complex for the average kid. I know people who were bored by it as kids, but I love the novel.

Regarding Solaris, did you try the library?

Regarding Frankenstein, what's your cover?

Understood. I just have to make time for it. My To Read list is about 125 books at present, and I've just picked up all of Charlie Brooker's series which will take some time to get through. But yes, Tolkien is definitely on my list.

I appreciate the suggestion. I'm just going to order a first English edition - I simply hadn't had the 3-5 minutes to spare to place the order. (I was busy getting married this week).

Now that I'd love to read! And what's this?!

If Tolkien was a Norse minstrel telling us tales at a pub, his writing style would be easy to overlook, especially with the great plot going on in LOTR. Unfortunately that's not the case and the writing style still hinders my enjoyment of the books.

Someone should rewrite the series to (1) make the reading itself more interesting and (2) really piss off the die hard fans.

Congratulations, you got the point.

I'm aware. It doesn't translate across mediums well, or at least Tolkien can't do it successfully.

NIMH... in the hands Ehren Kruger? As in the writer for the Transformer's movies? That movie's gonna need a really good director.
