Default The Alan Moore Thread

Now that I'm balls deep into Miracleman I'm feeling an Alan Moore fanboy thing coming on. I've read Watchmen twice, and love it, and probably The Killing Joke at least three times, along with some other stuff like his work on Spawn (seriously) and one of his Lovecraft stories. But I've still got so much to read, like Captain Britain, Swamp Thing, V for Vendetta, his Superman stories, etc.

I'm a fan of plenty of comic book writers, but Alan Moore is on a whole 'nother level than most everybody. There's just something about an Alan Moore comic that feels different to anything else, something almost primal in its genius, strangeness, and ultimate quality. The man is simply a comic god the like of which we may never see again, and I do not at all feel like a bandwagon-jumper for gushing over him.

Who else is like me?

P.S. Alan Moore thinks he's a legit wizard with magical powers. How awesome/bat**** crazy is that? He even looks like a young Gandalf.

Alan Moore has this crazy ability to find new ways to express his ideas with incredibly original storytelling - every one of his graphic novels is unique. I'm still in the middle of Promethea, a highly underrated gem. The story isn't as strong as some of his other work, but holy **** the artwork and the way the story is conveyed are on another level. I've never seen anything like it.

I legitimately think that while people like Grant Morrison and Frank Miller have elevated comics to an insanely high level, and others like Mark Millar and Brian Michael Bendis have done great things for mainstream comics, Alan Moore has a singular talent that really does make him the greatest comic writer of all-time. The man is just on a level all his own and everyone else is just trying for second place.

I completely agree. He is the reason I got into comics and graphic novels at all...I think that is the same for a lot of people.

I'm currently 18 issues in and going strong. So good. Moore's atmospheric, dense narration style is perfect for a horror story set in a swamp. But that psychedelic mind sex issue was just beautiful.

And have you read Miracleman? Amazing superhero deconstruction that really explores the idea of superheroes as gods. He only wrote sixteen issues before it was taken over by Neil ****ing Gaiman. How awesome does a comic have to be when it's two writers are Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman?
