I'll eventually see it when they play it on Disney XD.

Saw it today, and didn't hate it.
Yeah, it had parallels with A New Hope, and it was a little market-tested, but that didn't pull away from a decent film. I wouldn't say it was the best SW movie or anything, but it was a good flick nonetheless, and I'm intrigued to see what else Disney does with the sequels.

I saw it, and it was pretty much what I expected: big budget special effects (score), which unfortunately have to be paid for by attracting mass viewers... Hence, another predictably formulaic box office hit... I always expect this from a big budget action film. The pandering plot, insipid dialogue, and boring broadly-drawn characters... struck me as more of an economic decision rather than an artistic one...(rabbit trail: anyone else sick of the whole "badass-edgy-chick-with-daddy-issues-saves-the-world" routine??).
That said, I shamelessly enjoyed it for what it was, and after hearing such awful reviews about the latest Hunger Games, I'm glad I went with this one instead. Would I have enjoyed it as much had I waited for DVD? Not nearly. (Oh look at that, I'm rambling. Time to wipe my ass and clock out...) |

I really wanted to like this, but I just couldn't bring myself to appreciate it beyond simple enjoyment. It felt way too market tested all the way down to ripping off the first film too many times. Batlord nailed it when he said he's indifferent towards it. That's exactly my feeling when I walked out of the theater. At least the prequels had a bit of personality to them, despite being extremely mediocre.
Disney is going to put a nail in the coffin of this franchise if VIII is anywhere near this bland and generic. |

I was completely fine with the similarities of VII to IV...JJ did what George Lucas refused to do, and that's give the fans what they wanted. This one was the palate cleanser we all needed to get ready for a new trilogy. He provided sufficient screen time for the old cast while balancing the new. They started a lot of plot threads that could lead to 2 more movies that are probably going to be very different than VII.
In the end, we are dealing with Star Wars movies. There are bits in every single one of them that we could pick apart and criticize (except may Empire...that movie is nearly flawless) - so I went in and decided to base my opinion on how it made me feel. From that first rush of the opening crawl to the end - did it feel like Star Wars? Was I thoroughly entertained? Can I see this storyline continuing for 2 more movies (and more considering Disney is going to milk their $4billion purchase for all its worth)? Yes on all 3 counts.

Disney has ruled the world of animation for decades, they own the biggest comic book company that comes out with the biggest superhero movies, and now they're making money hand-over-fist with Star Wars? I'd be interested to know just much Disney has grown as a company in the last decade. I'm sure they're about to buy the rights to God pretty soon. I mean how much money is there in the top selling book of all time?

While I agree that a movie that is breaking nearly every record set is hardly a sign of any sort of "nail in the coffin", this wasn't necessary.
