Horror Movies That Didn't Suck This Year.
 

I haven't watched much of anything this year so, I really would like to see what everyone else has. I'll add the ones I did to start this off. Keep only has to have been released this year on DVD or in theater. So things that came out last year but, came out on DVD this year would be fine.

The Babadook. - Now it's been a long time since I've watched a horror movie and thought wow, this is really something different. The way that it goes between mental illness and the reality of things is really masterful. I gave it a solid 4 out of 5 because, the ending was a little odd for my tastes. I wanted it to end a different way but, I do understand the ending and why it happened that way. It makes sense but, was all too easy. 4/5 stars.

It Follows. - You either love or hate this movie. I for one, loved it. I really liked how the idea was modern, the setting was modern. It's just a good movie for the current generation in so many ways. It has a slow pace that a lot of people can't deal with but, if like really strange movies give it a shot. It's a different kind of fear compared to others. I can't say much of anything without spoiling. 4/5 stars.

I'll also add some I watched that were horrible.

Unfriended - My boyfriend wanted to watch this and I went in thinking hell, why not it might actually turn out to be ok. Well, I should have went with my initial feelings. The only thing I could give it is the idea of not being a dick on social media or at all. The ending ruined it completely though. 1.5/5 stars.

Poltergeist - What did you do to one of my favorite horror movies? Why? 1/5 stars. Don't watch it. Your eyes will bleed.

Things I've been meaning to watch.

Crimson Peak (Love the director his other films are usually amazing)
Insidious 3 - I've watched the other two the first being the best.
Sinister 2 - Heard it was horrible..
The Final Girls - A horror/comedy gem I saw a trailer for.
Knock Knock - Keanu Reeves.
The Witch - This movie looks amazing but, I think it comes out in 2016 on DVD not sure.

Here's a few from your list that I've seen

Babadook: Think it's a tad overrated but still very, very good.

It Follows: Nearly perfect, one of my favorite horror movies ever. I think the climactic sequence could have been done better though.

Unfriended: I actually really liked this one mainly for the interesting premise even though some of the details were a little meh. I think such a style could be executed a lot better someday in the future but they will unfortunately be labeled as copycats so I'm not sure if there's any direction for this kind of movie to go outside of a sequel (which I will definitely go see).

Poltergeist 2015: Utter trash, like a ****ing absolute disaster of a movie. There were more laughs than scares.

Insidious 3: Thought this was actually really good and competes for best in the series. There were some very, very terrifying parts because of a villain who was incredibly menacing and effective. However if you've seen the first 2 in this series you mostly know what to expect in terms of tone and soundtrack etc so it's not really a must-watch unless you love the franchise like I do.

Sinister 2: My most disappointing movie experience maybe of the entire year. The first Sinister ranks among my favorite horror films ever and might even compete for #1, I just absolutely love everything about the directing, the style, the soundtrack, the acting, the flow...just a superb horror film imo. The sequel however? As much as I wanted to like it, now that I'm several months removed from the hype I now can realize just how terrible the movie is. Deputy So-and-So does his best but **** this movie sucks.

I think I'll just skip on watching Sinister 2 then lol. Really don't want to put myself through another horrible movie. The Gift already did that for me. Not horror but, relevant to how horrificly bad it was.

Unfriended actually there IS another similar movie coming out that looks somewhat better. It really is a fantastic idea executed poorly. It almost feels like it should have a Japanese original it really seems like a movie that came from something better. Sadly it did not. What bothered me was.

Good I can't wait to watch Insidious 3 then. That part in the first movie was my favorite part. It scared me so good in all the right ways.

I'm glad you also liked It Follows it bothers me when people dismiss it as artistic pretentious crap. (Hipsters or something) Or, perhaps am I the hipster for liking it? Who cares. All these stupid terms I just really liked the movie and the message of the movie.

Have you watched anything else this year?

I like horror movies, but most of them are annoying and formulaic to me and I didn't see many new ones this year.

It Follows is amazing.

Watched Bone Tomahawk a few days ago. Really liked it.

The Boy

not just my favorite horror film this year....it's easily withing my top ten for the year....it's basically a slow movie examination of a 9 year old sociopath.....from what i understand it is the fist part in a trilogy that will watch this kid grow into a full blown serial killer

i have a few more great horror films from this year....i'll post them later when i have a little more time :)

I'm guessing that The Boy won't be out on DVD etc. until next year considering I looked up a trailer and found it was at a film festival. It sounds really interesting. I'd love to watch it but, obviously can't yet lol. Please feel free to post more whenever you like.

I decided to look up Bone Tomahawk this looks really interesting. I didn't expect it to be in this sort of setting. Is this horror, or a thriller though? It seems like more of a thriller or psychological. Which I also love. I'd like to watch it with my dad though. It looks like something he would enjoy a lot.

I tend to enjoy some slashers but, yes a lot of horror is formulaic. It does tend to follow a pattern. There's those great films that break the mold though. Ones that write characters outside of the laws. Write endings that you won't see coming. Sadly this year I've yet to find many outside of what's been listed.

The movie is basically a western, but there are definite horror elements and some pretty extreme violence, although the general tone of the movie is more low key.

Sounds like a really interesting combination!

i'm pretty sure The boy is available on VOD....positive it's on amazon....and its very much worth your time

definitely more atmospheric horror.....but slow building is often better when done right.....this creepy German film does it right
