The Themed Top Ten Movies Thread
It works like this: someone picks a theme and then gives their top ten best and/or worst movies with that theme. We can stick to one theme for a while or people can choose their own. If possible, try to write a little about your movies and why you love or hate them.
I'm going with VAMPIRES as the first theme, so if anyone else wants to compile their list go ahead; I'm working on mine, and it's not easy. I forgot there were so many good, and bad, ones out there. Back later.

I like this idea.
Vampires 1. Thirst -Director Park Chan-Wook (Oldboy) directs this film about a priest and his experiences as he becomes a vampire. Phenomenal screenplay and it's very well shot, it also really boils down the moral dilemma in a way I haven't seen many other movies do. 2. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night -Surreal, dark, and slightly comedic take on the vampire genre. It's got a very unique vibe that I could see the director extending to make himself an auteur. 3. Let the Right One In -Love the original version, this was an instant classic the moment it came out. 4. Nosferatu -Don't even need to explain this one. 5. Shadow of the Vampire -A film about Nosferatu that's very well done. Not my favourite from the director, but there are solid performances and cinematography. 6. Nosferatu the Vampyre -Herzog's take on the story. 7. Cronos -I like this one, but not nearly as much as the others. Kind of not the biggest fan of the vampire genre. 8. From Dusk Till Dawn -Loads of fun, nice dialogue from Tarantino. Not nearly the best work from anyone involved though. 9. Only Lovers Left Alive -Beautiful Jarmusch flick. 10. The Lost Boys -Okay, I guess I'll add it.

OK well here finally are mine. They're not actually in order, other than the top three:
1. Interview with the Vampire (1994) --- Anne Rice's historical-horror-erotica novel brought to life, though the book is far better of course. They did a decent job on the movie, and surprisingly Cruise doesn't suck as bad as I thought he would. Go Lestat! Great music too. 2. The Forsaken (2001) --- A forgotten classic of the genre. In a sort of retelling of The Lord of the Rings, nine knights were cursed to live as vampires after asking for immortality from a demon. A vampire hunter is on the way to kill one of them, whom he believes to have infected him. 3. Let the right one in (2008) --- Totally amazing film. Forget the remake, this is the one to see. That scene at the swimming pool! 4. 30 Days of Night (2007) --- Very violent but a great idea. Excellent ending, quite unexpected. Based on the comic book of the same name. Apparently. 5. Fright Night (1985) --- Again, forget the remake. Roddy McDowall shines as the TV host turned reluctant Van Helsing, and the mix of comedy and darkness sets this movie off perfectly. 6. The Lost Boys (1987) --- Kiefer "Jack Bauer" Sutherland in a vampire movie? What's not to like? 7. From Dusk till Dawn (1996) --- Great fun, with added violence. 8. John Carpenter's Vampire$ (1998) --- Another really fun movie, ultra-gory 9. The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) --- Stupid but fun, and directed by Roman Polanski 10. Queen of the Damned (2002) --- Sequel to Interview with the final performance of Aaliyah. Back later with my top ten worst Vampire movies.

I haven't seen Thirst yet. That and Joint Security Area are the only Chan Wook Park films I haven't seen. I should get on that. I'm not big on vampire movies but I'll try to crack a top list. It may not be ten.
1. Only Lovers Left Alive - Total vibe film that has some of the best chemistry between two actors I've ever seen in Swinton and Hiddleston. 2. Let The Right One In - Beautiful film that caught me totally off guard when I first saw it. I should watch this again. It's been too long. 3. What We Do In The Shadows - I just saw this the other night and loved it. Perfect mockumentary with great lines and sight gags. "Don't you interrupt my dark bidding." "What are you bidding on?" "I'm bidding on a table." 4. From Dusk til Dawn - I used to watch this as a kid. Used to give me nightmares. Still a fun as f*ck movie to watch. 5. Nosferatu the Vampyre - Herzog directing Kinski as Nosferatu? Yeah, it's awesome. I'm biased though because I love anything Herzog does, especially with Kinski. 6. Nosferatu - Classic. Still creeps me out. Watched it recently. It holds up. 7. Stakeland - I'm a huge Jim Mickle fan. I'm sure this is a film ost of you haven't seen. You should see it. It's very well made and tense. 8. Spring - New film. I'm throwing this isn't the genre although it's a bit unique. I think that's it. Don't like The Lost Boys and haven't seen Interview with a Vampire in ages so I can't comment. I still feel I'm missing one or two good ones. |
