"That" was referring to bob's subject.

John Wilkes Booth 07-29-2015 12:31 PM

Frownland 07-29-2015 12:38 PM

Oh, I thought you were referring to his weak syntax game by bolding Dogville, but I see now that that was his doing.

It is the most soul crushingly sad film I've ever seen. I've had movies make me cry but that one sent me into an emotional breakdown.

Pretty much this. That film crushed my soul.

John Wilkes Booth 07-29-2015 05:10 PM

you're talking about "dancer in the dark" and not "dogville", right?

cause i think i've seen dogville. but i don't remember much about it.

Yes.

John Wilkes Booth 07-29-2015 05:16 PM

alright, probably give that film a try then.

The post I made was after somebody, I believe bob, said to start with Dancer in the Dark. I said to start with Dogville and explained why Dancer in the Dark killed wasn't a good start. It was confusing.

Exo 08-31-2015 02:15 PM

Everybody should see White God. It's on Netflix right now.

Mondo Bungle 04-09-2017 06:06 PM

Can you hit me with any cool ass acid/postmodern/artsy westerns, like Dead Man (obv)

Exo 04-09-2017 07:13 PM

I forgot I made this thread.

El Topo by Jodorowsky is probably your best best but I'd also check out Bone Tomahawk even though it's violent and also Paris, Texas for a more west texas modern western feel albeit being a drama.

Other good ones could include The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Slow West, and Young Ones.

Go with El Topo though. That's your best rec from me.

Dead Man's Bones

Brilliant fucking film, I've seen it dozens of times. Paddy Considine does an amazing job, as with any movie he's in. Engrossing story, a few twists, brutal violence at some points, just incredible. I recommend it to anybody, but especially Exo and Chula I'm sure you two will eat that shit up.

***Meant to post this in the other movie thread

Exo 04-13-2017 05:58 PM

Funny, IIRC Chula has been championing this film for a while now. I've also seen it and enjoyed it very much. Have you seen Tyrannosaur? Different kind of movie but SO GOOD.

I saw it once but forgot everything about it. I know Paddy directed it and also a scene where someone takes a piss on someone else? I could be wrong.

Peter Mullan does what he pleases.

I'm watching it tonight after work. Do you prefer a special ale I should get before I watch it?

Any booze will do. It's incredibly depressing. You'll need booze. High ABV.

Justthefacts 04-14-2017 02:33 PM

I'm getting whiskey.

I don't mean to pick holes, but the picture says Dead Man's Shoes?

Lol I was thinking of that dumb Ryan Gosling band

Exo 04-15-2017 02:45 PM

I like that "Pa Pa Power" song and that's all.

The Batlord 04-15-2017 02:47 PM

Ryan Gosling has a band?

Exo 04-15-2017 02:49 PM

Sort of.

Justthefacts 04-15-2017 02:51 PM

Aside from the movie he directed, it's the worst thing he's been apart of.

Frownland 04-16-2017 10:36 AM

Get me some good atmospheric horror I probably haven't seen Exo.

Onibaba (1964) by Kaneto Shindô
Don't Look Now (1973) by Nicolas Roeg
Pretty much anything by Dario Argento
Repulsion (1965) by Roman Polanski
Possession (1981) by Andrzej Żuławski

Frownland 04-16-2017 10:58 AM

I've only seen Repulsion and Suspiria off of that list. Thanks!

Thelonious Monkey 04-16-2017 11:11 AM

My friend played some 28 days later for us all a few weeks back. Me and somebody else hadn't seen it, and it was probably one of the best zombie films I've ever seen. Got anything like it that I can recommend to them? About 5 or so movies would be nice, just so I don't give them one and nobody is up for it.

You just lost a lot of pretentious movie lover cred.

They Look Like People
Wyrmwood
These Final Hours
La Horde (The Horde)

Wait what!?

Fast rage infected people is the best zombie film you have seen?

Slow walkers are always better than fast walkers.

Walking speed of the enemy doesn't make a film good or bad when it's about real people. Why should it with zombies? For the record, I like slow zombies too, but fast zombies present doesn't prevent a film being great. I love 28 Days/Weeks later.

kibbeh 04-17-2017 02:07 PM

someone who makes films like kiarostami?????

Jesus, you can't duplicate Kiarostami. Have you seen Iran's tour de force of a director Ashgar Farhadi yet? If not, do that.

That's really the only thing that bothers me about those movies and prevent them from being great in my eyes.

Those technically weren't zombies though. Zombies are the living dead. They died and came back. 28 Days/Weeks was an infection that induced pure rage. If you look at it like that, you may just forget that they're "fast".

Mondo Bungle 04-18-2017 05:11 PM

I wish I could search for movies like the Shining and actually find similar movies instead of just "you may like A Clockwork Orange and Reservoir Dogs and gay sex). Like come on The Shining (1980) - IMDb

what do you got for that

The Witch, Rosemary's Baby (you ever seen that one?) and The Babadook.

*waits for Exo to add onto this because this hard time finding similar movies to The Shining situation frustrates me too*

Mondo Bungle 04-18-2017 05:19 PM

I like the Babadook but it's overrated imo. Definitely have to watch again because I remember it being kinda generic when I watched a long time ago
