Acting was solid, but nothing mindblowing. My personal interpretation would have to lie in line with Roger Ebert's, that the scenes in the present with Tommy being the only ones actually happening. Izzi's book explains the Spanish story perfectly and I reckon the cosmic one is the last chapter that Tommy added. Although I would say it's left ambiguous on purpose. Btw, this being the first one and around Christmas time I didn't expect a wealth of responses. Testing the waters and all. It will grow with time! New film gets announced tomorrow |

So I am not part of this club, but I love this movie. I have loved it for years.
It's an incredibly deep film, moving on so many levels, and not only that it's dripping in spiritual symbolism. There are so many moving messages and things one can take away from this film I just don't see how one could watch and come away a negative. But I hear that more often then I hear it was fabulous.

but ya I kind of mirror Exo's thoughts on The Fountain. I had a long ass paragraph written like a week ago but left it and forgot to post. oh well Basically I think it was obviously a gorgeous looking film, but beyond that it was just uninteresting. All of the characters were just so boring. Like they all the depth of the cardboard cutouts that would stand infront of their theatre. Made it very hard for me to care about anything that happened to them. I know I should have cared about Izzi's death, but ya, nothing. I think The Fountain reminds me a lot of Pan's Labyrinth. Theyre nice to look at, but everything else was just kinda lame :/ |

See, I agree with you, yes it might have been better received to the masses the the love story was the main focal point. But for me, I am able to see a love story that transcends time, and encompasses not only the love the protagonists shared but also the creators love for us, as intelligent and spiritual beings, and that for me was represented beautiful with his relationship with the tree, and through the gorgeous visuals through out the movie. If you dumb down the plot so that any moron can grasp it, you are doing the movie's incredible disservice.

Well, remember, I didn't receive it that well. I guess I meant it would have been better received by me. I thought the philosophical ideas were interesting but laid out in a confusing and disjointed way. A love story would have worked better for me.

Really, how so, maybe I can explain my theory. I'm not saying I am right, I just know how I received it. I don't think you are a moron.......moron.
