comedians

what stand up comedians do you like? i feel like some of you hipster types will come at me with some lenny bruce **** but really what stand up comedians actually make you laugh? i'll tell you the ones i like

louis ck
hannibal burress
jim norton
gilbert gotfried
bernie mac
patrice oneal
norm macdonald
chris rock... to an extent back in the day not so much anymore tbh

i like seinfeld the show and sometimes i might smirk at the act at the beginning of it but i never really watched him as a stand up. i have a feeling he wouldn't do it to me.

i like larry david in curb your enthusiasm cause he can paint the picture so vividly and he's a funny old jew but i have the feeling on stage he's probably not great.

i liked some of george carlin's old rants and ****, like i will watch that **** and be mildly amused and agree with everything he's saying but it won't make me laugh for the most part.

i prefer pryor to carlin but truth be told i perfer most of those new guys to pryor. probably just because i relate to the context and the times of their jokes more.

another comedian i sort of admire yet don't find that funny is bill hicks. he's smart and he'll rant and his rants will sometimes hit really good points, sometimes it will be some crazy conspiracy bull****. but either way it doesn't really make me laugh.

and what little i've heard of lenny bruce it seems that he was like 50's edgy which is so far from edgy nowadays that i'd really have to try hard to find it funny. i'd probably see more insight in it like i do with carlin, pryor, etc.

what about you guys?

Frownland 12-06-2014 10:25 PM

Mitch Hedburg and Louis CK are my two faves. Don't listen to or watch much these days, though. Zack Galifinakis and Marc Maron are both pretty funny and they have standup specials on Netflix, might check that out.

John Wilkes Booth 12-06-2014 10:27 PM

whats the best mitch hedburg show to you?

Chula Vista 12-06-2014 10:50 PM

Mitch was hit or miss as his addiction started taking over. But even when he was off he slayed.

Robin Williams. May sound cliche but he really was the funniest ****er ever.

I honestly couldn't tell you. His shows are a series of one liners that don't really flow the way a lot of standup goes. I'ven't heard a bad set from him though, so I'll put this one up

The Batlord 12-06-2014 11:07 PM

The other day, I was making Hot Pockets, and I could not physically restrain myself from going, "HOT POCKEEEEET!" in a Jim Gaffigan voice. His thoughts on bacon are quite insightful as well.

Love that guy. Patton Oswalt is in the same vein.

btw any random comedy videos are encouraged in this thread

i have to recheck his work cause honestly i remember watching one of his coked up hbo specials when i was a teen and finding it hilarious. dude is like the rain man of comedy... mind just works too fast.

Chula Vista 12-06-2014 11:19 PM

Posted this before but it's worth a reboot.

honestly won't knock it they're clever jokes just not the kind of **** to make me laugh. too light hearted i guess. but his bedroom bit basically reminded me of a hannibal burress bit and made me think that most likely hannibal borderline bit that ****... if i find a youtube vid of that bit i will post it.

DwnWthVwls 12-07-2014 12:26 AM

A few unmentioned names..

Ralphie May
Kings of Comedy
Bobcat Goldthwait (in small doses)
Gabriel Iglesias
Dave Chappelle

Nice to see Mitch Hedberg and Marc Maron mentioned so early on in the thread.

sometimes I think of this when I walk past a Subway and I start cracking up.

edit:

and then there's this, which fully sums up a large part of my personality.

Goofle 12-07-2014 06:49 AM

Richard Herring is my favourite.

Moss 12-07-2014 11:19 AM

Agree on Patton Oswalt. Here is a great example of his humor:

DwnWthVwls 12-07-2014 12:39 PM

Eddy Izzard
Wanda Sykes

Ricky Gervais

Frownland 12-07-2014 12:48 PM

Oh **** yes, Eddie Izzard. He's my favourite actually.

Machine 12-07-2014 09:29 PM

Bill Hicks

Demetri Martin

Bo Burnham

Flight Of The Conchords

Kevin Hart

Hannibal Buress

DeadChannel 12-07-2014 11:49 PM

Oh, c'mon, Lenny Bruce is great.

George Carlin
Robin Williams
Jim Carrey (despite occasionally doing crap)
All of the pythons

John Wilkes Booth 12-08-2014 12:44 AM

norm macdonald is an underrated genius.

Not a huge fan. Movies or standup. He has his moments for sure and he's a good actor, I just don't find his stupidity funny most of the time.

I think Russell Brand is brilliant in Messiah Complex -- and I like the way he can laugh at himself.

Chula Vista 12-09-2014 09:08 PM

I gained a ton of respect for Brand with what he wrote about Amy Winehouse.

For Amy « Russell Brand

ribbons 12-09-2014 09:39 PM

Thanks for posting that, Chula. I'd never seen Brand's tribute to Amy before. I think he has a very keen mind and I applaud his efforts to educate people and the government about addiction.

Wpnfire 12-11-2014 08:08 PM

Richard Pryor is probably my favorite.

Sparky 01-21-2015 09:15 PM

Kumail nanjini is fresh

For a second there I thought Franco was back.

Yac 01-22-2015 08:09 AM

What about Frankie Boyle ? Am i the only one to love this Scottish bastards evil sense of humor ? Youtube is full of his standups and whatnot, one more offensive than the other, so maybe I won't link to anything, you can find it easily. No topic is off limits for him, but he's an equal opportunity offender and out of all groups he makes fun of, he mocks the Scottish the most.

John Wilkes Booth 01-22-2015 09:39 AM

i honestly think russell brand is an annoying c*nt

honestly never heard of him, so i youtubed him.

 not bad. any specials of his you'd recommend? i am a sucker for offensive comedy

EPOCH6 01-22-2015 01:34 PM

Eric Andre and Hannibal Buress are kings.

Tom Segura doesn't seem to have any trouble making me lose my ****
Louis C.K. and Chelsea Handler are pretty funny sometimes

I used to be a huge Carlin fan in my teens but after the incendiary political commentary lost its effect on me so did a bit of his charm. I still think his delivery is incredibly skilled, his confidence is incredible, and his voice is unforgettable.

If he was a woman, I would marry him. Speaking of Scots, I love me some Craig Ferguson. He's just so cheesy and happy-go-lucky that he makes me smile. I'm totally bummed that he's leaving his show soon. He was the first late night host I've legitimately cared about since Conan left for TNT or whatever.

He's awesome.

Engine 01-22-2015 10:42 PM

If Craig Ferguson is awesome it's not because of his work on the Drew Carey show. He seems likable enough, I've never watched his stand up though.

I like so many comedians you can pretty much name a popular one and I probably like him or her, and have watched all of their Comedy central or Netflix specials. It's easier to list ones I don't like. I can't say why exactly I don't like them they just don't make me laugh:

Jim Gaffigan
Bo Burnham
Nick Thune
probably a lot of others I don't immediately recall

One who's stand up/Hollywood acting I don't like is Bobby Lee. But his web series Bobby Lee: Talking is often hilarious

John Wilkes Booth 01-22-2015 10:48 PM

i agree about bo burnham. some c*nt i used to know introduced me to him which makes me dislike him even more

Cuthbert 01-22-2015 11:02 PM

Frankie Boyle is a bit of a cunt imo. One of the worst comedians in this country. Once you've heard a few of his jokes you've heard them all.

He's a bit of a bully as well.

yungtomselleck 01-23-2015 12:42 AM

Ive grown to love Hannial from The Eric Andre show

I know him best from "Mock the week", especially the deleted bits ;) And he's probably in every "most offensive jokes" compilation out there. And I agree he's a c*nt, but a funny one :P
Mock the week though - I discovered this show quite recently and binge watched it all in under a month. And thanks to this show, I discovered another guy that does great standup, though not nearly as offensive as Frankie ;) His name is Ed Byrne and here's the 1st part of his imo best show.

Goofle 01-23-2015 06:55 AM

Ed Bryne is very funny.
