I adore Stephen Fry, and his comparison of American and British comedy are among my favorite of his remarks. I have autographed first edition hardcovers of Mythos and Heroes, the Quite Interesting home game and travel game, the first ten series of QI on my server, and other various Fry treasures about my home.
The kinetic typographical animation of Fry's thoughts on Language is my all-time favorite video on YouTube. Fry also recalls an amusing anecdote about JK Rowling during Fry's recording of the audiobooks for the Harry Potter series. And for anyone making a first-venture into the hilarity of QI, Series B episode 05, "Bears" is my pick for the all-time best episode. And the No Such Thing As A Fish podcast hosted by the QI elves is delightful as well for anyone craving more QI goodness. Thanks for sharing the classic clip!

That's a trend, not a rule, and not even what I was getting at. A well-structured joke can be funny no matter the content, but jokes based in bigotry aren't light-hearted. Even in cases where it's effectively approached light-heartedly, the impact of the humour often comes from the shock of reframing a heavy subject in such a way. Chapelle's barely in the category of quality anything humour, though his voice (and face!) are damn funny stuff when he's into it.

Yeah? IMO this was the worst of his specials since the comeback. Felt like story time with some humorous observations along the way. I was bored throughout.

I only watched the first half or so and there was definitely a fixation on lgbt **** but it was still pretty funny.... I was drunk at I'm trying to remember but i thought the idea of him enjoying busting in a priests face as a kid was pretty funny

I have thought his latest Netflix specials were okay. I don't remember if I liked this one more than the previous ones. There's some parts that really crack me up and there are other parts that somewhat drag. Chappelle is supremely talented though, no doubt. I will admit, I tire of the LGBTQ+ subject matter though. It's not that he doesn't make the jokes work, because most of the time he does - I just think that as a basis for jokes and comedy, it does get somewhat played out. There's so much material in contemporary politics, culture and news these days that Chappelle could utilize to great effect but he chooses to narrow his focus instead and for that, I think the specials are somewhat lesser as a result. That being said, the media attention he manages to generate with them, and the Twitter outrage obviously garners a lot of press. I'm sure it's not unintentional. |
