MB Comic Book Club
OK, so I imagine this is a simple concept. A comic/graphic novel/TPB/whatever is nominated, we all read it, then discuss. I'll probably make up the rules when necessary as I go along, but I'm keeping it simple at the moment. I'll wait for some people to show interest so I can gauge how they might like to approach this or what they'd be into reading. It would make sense to at least start light, since expecting everyone to read all of Will Eisner's A Contract with God might be a tad unrealistic, which is the good thing about comics, since we can always choose to read just one issue of something and see where it goes from there. But other than that, old, new, art, pulp, DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Vertigo, whatevs.
Also, on the one hand it's not so easy to track a comic book down at the library, or find them even at a book/comic store, but there are also... other means to obtain them, so hopefully this shouldn't be too terribly tricky for people to get their hands on stuff. If anyone has a problem then I've amassed a fairly good network of comic collecting resources over the net, so I can probably help anyone out who can't find something. So yeah, hopefully this works out. |
Thank you Im a dark horse gal...

This sounds fun, I'm in
|
I'm down.
|
which one of you nerds is picking the first read?
|
Well it'd be cool if we could talk a bit and get a general idea of what to read. Like old school Iron Man or something more recent like Uncanny Avengers. Or something more adult like Preacher. Whatever. Or I know they've done polls in albums clubs where everybody just made suggestions and voted on it... or I can just pick one for all you lazyasses.
I've also had the idea of doing one issue of something and giving people a week to read it, or two weeks or whatever is reasonable, and then we can all vote on whether to continue it or not. Maybe even start another series a little later and have them both, or more, going at the same time. But nobody would be obligated to read them all, just whatever they felt like, so different people could be all be reading different things and talking about them in their own groups. Or something like that. |
Does it have to be superhero-type comics or can we rock some other kinds as well?
|
I like that last idea. Pick one in a series and vote on continuing it or not.
I personally enjoy a more adult themed graphic novel. But Im not opposed to marvel or dc. |
It can be whatever. Although I better not find out I'm stuck with a bunch of anti-superhero fun-haters. Another reason I like the idea of more than one series being active at any one time. People who don't want to read one thing won't be left out if they're like Roxy and hate Jesus (Spider-Man), since they'll have something else. Why don't some people make some suggestions, and maybe we'll put a poll up in a day or two, or whenever it feels like the people who are coming are already here.
I've actually got Y the Last Man on my list and have been meaning to get into it, so I'll put that into the pot. Now ya'll's turn... |
Y-the last man is great.
I'm going to vote for 100 bullets as its one of my favorites. But I've been meaning to get into the goon. |
I think the fact that we actually have a girl in our comic book club already makes us better then 90% of other comic book clubs.

I want to join but I have commitment issues with joining clubs. If I get around to it I will read whatever.
Currently reading the new Ms. Marvel atm. Fatale would be my suggestion. I've been meaning to it. |

Yeah, the Muslim girl from Jersey City. It has been pretty good so far. I have all seven of them but I'm only on the third one right now.
|
There's only seven issues? Good time to get in on it then... except I'm not gonna start that without reading Captain Marvel first. I hate comic books.
|
Seven issues released so far yeah. #8 is coming out this Wednesday.
I just looked up Captain Marvel and she makes an appearance in #14. |
If I have the time and can get the stuff then I'm in (now and again)

As for the new Ms. Marvel series, it's pretty good, her first team up is with Wolverine, although I'm lacking the context for what's befallen his character in the most recent issues. I kind of feel for superhero comics we should really just focus on story arcs, or ones with a shorter run. |
Well, it looks like a pretty full house, so I guess it's time to get started with a poll. The voting will last for a day or so. ATM we're only committing to reading the first issue in the series. We can decide how long to give people to read an issue as we go. I'd say a week, but I know album clubs tend to give two weeks, so we'll see. After that time we'll all vote on whether to continue the series or not.
So could a mod please put up the following poll: Y the Last Man 100 Bullets Wake Up, Percy Gloom Fatale Quote:

You are 5% about the ham... In particular Goofle's ham...

I voted 100 Bullets b/c it's the only one I know on the poll. Anyway, I'm so down. Reading comics online is very non-collectorish but let's do this. If we're reading some very-not-mainstream stuff for Jans then I'm especially in.
EDIT I didn't realize the poll was for what we WANT to read I thought it was just fer votin. Somebody gotta make an executive decision |

What would have voted for, anyway? |
Voted 100 Bullets.
