SPOILERS. ONLY READ IF YOU HAVE FINISHED THE FIRST FIVE ISSUES.
So I just finished reading the first five issues of Y: The Last Man, and I have to say, so far I'm loving it. It was a bit difficult for me to get into it, at the beginning, but the characters soon grew on me, and I am anxious to find out what happens next. It builds upon a lot of curious questions, about what it would be like if Woman ran the world. Misandry. The Amazons believe that "Mother Earth" cleansed the world of the Y Chromosome. This is perfectly realized (to an extent) of these radical views. Also, I was quite surprised to find Yorick's Sister, Hero, was with this group. When she was told to shoot the woman who rode the motorbike, she hesitated, and was threatened to do it, unless she is not a true Daughter of the Amazon. Disturbing reality. I can't wait to see more of her story as she goes on, and how Yorick will react. Let's hope she doesn't find herself having to kill her own brother (doubt it) or risk her own life. But enough about the Amazons. As interesting as they were, they weren't the most interesting. That would be Yorick himself. I was genuinely rooting for this guy through any shit that happened. To say he is (supposedly), the last man on Earth, he sure as hell keeps his cool, and is (surprisingly) funny, considering the situation he has been placed in. Although I don't get the point of having a Monkey as part of this story. It was perfectly logical and normal as to how he acquired him, but I don't see why the writers make him significant. It's supposed to be the extinction of any Y Chromosome. One man survived, and his fucking Monkey. Who cares about the Monkey. They could take the Monkey out, and I wouldn't even care. Anyway, enough about the Monkey. There is going to be a lot of shit going down for Yorick, and I can't wait to see what happens. Agent 355 is the most mysterious of all the characters we are introduced to. I mean, yeah, they shout out facts about her being a secret service agent, or some shit like that, and what her job is. But we don't get to delve into her herself. We don't know nothing about her, other than her job to follow commands and do what the President says. I want to know more about her back-story. Maybe they could show what she was doing at the time when shit hit the fan. Got a feeling she might die though. As for the Mother and Doctor Allison Mann, I am not too bothered about them as we speak. Dr. Mann hasn't had enough time to develop, and the Mother is, well, just a mother. Not too bothered about her. I have to say, I didn't think reading comics was this awesome. Definitely look forward to going through the story. I won't read any more until Batlord gives the green light. Awesome comic so far. |

Still waiting for my copy to download. I may have somewhere I can download almost any comic, sure, but it depends on their connection speed, and this guy is at about 2 to 7/kbps. So bloody slow! Don't know if I'm going to get in on this in time, but I'll try.

It's a lot of fun, although I've only ready the first few trade paperbacks, so maybe 18 issues, but I enjoyed what I read. It's pretty quintessential Vertigo style comics with some sharp writing and some very different artwork. It is far more similar to what you'd expect to find it a child's book which juxtaposes nicely to all the sex, violence, and people getting their heads blown off with .50 caliber rifles.

Looking to start reading the Annihilation crossover event from Marvel, and I'm wondering if anybody else wants to join in.
It sounds like Year 0 for the modern Marvel Cosmic line -- which is basically a whole section of Marvel comics not based on Earth (i.e. generally no Spider-Man, Avengers, X-Men, etc). Stuff like Silver Surfer, Guardians of the Galaxy (although GotG actually came after Annihilation, but most of the Guardians were involved individually), Thanos, Nova, etc. Annihilation starts around the early/mid-'00s, so it's a little ways back, but it also sets up seemingly everything that would be important up till the present point, and it seems to be universally regarded as a great series. There's a couple reading lists I've tracked down, and I've almost got all of the relevant series downloaded, so I can provide necessary links. There are three trade paperbacks that collect most of the issues involved, so if people want to just do that, then that's cool, but I'm gonna try to get to the other stuff myself (Thanos #7-#12, which is sort of a prologue to the prologue of Annihilation, and Nova #1-#3, which is partially an epilogue). After that comes another sequal series, Annihilation Conquest, that I'll get to if I still have the energy, but we don't have to go into that as a group, though it involves the actual Guardians of the Galaxy, which would be cool for us to get into. *partial derail* Interestingly, the first volume of GotG (technically the second, but according to my research the first came a decade earlier and had zero to do with the modern incarnation, meaning it can be ignored) was different from the movie, and had a somewhat different concept (they were created specifically as a peacekeeping force rather than a ragtag, Firefly-esque, quasi-vigilante group, using characters who had already been established, and in the case of Starlord and Rocket Raccoon at least, since the seventies and eighties). There's a new GotG series that seems to be more in line with the movie version though, but this first/second volume appears to be the more highly regarded. *end derail* So, anyone down? Jansz? Bob.? Violet (assuming you're still around)? If so, then here's a reading list in order...
Bolded are in the trades. And the ones in the parenthesis under Annihilation, (e.g. Nova #1-4 and Silver Surfer #1-4) are Annihilation-specific, and not associated with actual monthly, solo titles (e.g. Nova #1-3).

Start with Thanos #7-12? Or Drax the Destroyer #1-5. Drax is the official start, but Thanos has some kind of lead-in or something, so that's where I'm starting.
