Tonight Show w/ Jimmy Fallon: thoughts?

Really surprised there isn't a thread about this already... Anyone been watching it? I think the first show was kind of a letdown because of the douchey people he had on (Will Smith and U2) but Jimmy's been killing it since then. His style seems to bring out the best in his guests. I could definitely see him hosting for a couple of decades and becoming a sort of American icon like Carson was. What do you guys think?

Paul Smeenus 02-26-2014 02:08 AM

With all respect, kh, I utterly hate Fallon. He never makes me laugh.

butthead aka 216 02-26-2014 03:26 AM

i havent seen the new show yet but lemme drop some general thoughts

i think fallon is an exceptional talent with a really unique skill set... crazy energy and enthusiasm, can write and also perform in skits, can sing to some degree, does impressions, interviews, etc...... dude just does it all. hall of fame snl cast member for sure, i loved his work there and he was great on the weekdn update

i did really like his late nite show but havent been watchin late nite in awhile. im not optimistic about seth meyers on late nite tho, he has a lot of similar qualities as fallon but i dont think hes as funny on screen, hes more of a writer. but cool move gettin fred armisen to be the band drummer

jimmy had a fun show, i didnt see or read if the format was gonna change much now that hes moved time slots but i hope it doesnt. i will always prefer kimmel as my go-to late nite guy but fallon is clearly second. i can see fallon bein really succesful for a long time

The Batlord 02-26-2014 12:02 PM

I always despised Jimmy Fallon. That part on Family Guy where Peter kicks his ass after he sleeps with Meg and then asks "Now where's the bastard who slept with my daughter?" made my decade. He's better on his show though. I'm not crazy about him or anything, but he's much better in a more improv setting than he is on a scripted show like SNL. Sort of like Conan. Except not nearly as magnificent.

In general I could give a **** about anyone in general replacing Jay Leno, but Jay's Headlines segment killed me every time and now I'll never see that again. So **** Jimmy Fallon.

djchameleon 02-26-2014 05:05 PM

This doesn't need a thread but Seth Meyers is rocking his new spot though.

Also if you think that Will Smith is a douche then you need Jesus.

James 02-26-2014 05:08 PM

Yeah, Kanye on Seth Myers was really enjoyable. A difficult guest to do right and he smashed it to be honest.

djchameleon 02-26-2014 05:10 PM

I really like that Seth Meyers doesn't dumb down his humor. He had jokes about Venn Diagrams and all of his political humor is usually pretty hilarious.

Paul Smeenus 02-26-2014 06:24 PM

I do like Seth, he was the only reason I watched SNL after Andy Samberg left. I will check it out if and when I'm up at that hour

butthead aka 216 02-26-2014 06:30 PM

i listened to seth meyers on howard stern a few days before he started. he seemed excited and a little nervous since its such a different format for him. i respect seth as a writer but he sucked on the weekend update on snl compared to when fallon did it

YorkeDaddy 02-26-2014 07:52 PM

Are there literally people in this thread saying they like Seth but dont like Fallon?

yes which is shockin and somewhat bizarre to me

Laces Out Dan! 02-26-2014 08:11 PM

I never cared for Jimmy Fallon on SNL...but I think hes the best Late Night host on TV.

It is Paul's second performance that makes this video though.

I don't get it either. Fallon is FANTASTIC, Seth is really average but clearly has potential. He still feels really rigid and awkward, like he's not quite ready for the big time, but I think once he starts getting comfortable he'll be solid.

But the Fallon hate? I mean what? I've never heard or met anyone that doesn't think Jimmy Fallon is one of the funniest dudes alive. He has been killing it every single night since he took over Tonight Show imo

i think its mainly bizarre because i look at seth meyers like a poor mans fallon.

two guys with really unique skill sets and snl is a crazy place to succeed and be funny which theyve both done. i think they do basically the same thing and fulfilled similar and the same roles at snl but fallon is way more comfy in front of the camera.

i dunno i dont get how ppl could dislike fallon but like seth

Moss 02-26-2014 11:31 PM

Love Fallon. And Seth tapping Fred Armison for his band leader is genius.

Maybe douche is too strong a word, he just leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth whenver I see him interviewed, like he's fake. For example I read that "Will Smith doesn't use profanity in his lyrics because his grandmother wrote to him 'intelligent people do not use these words to express themselves'". Then he swears in his movies... right.

It's probably his Scientology background that gives off that fake feeling for you. I understand and get that. It's similar to Tom Cruise.

Also he barely curses in his movies, they are usually PG-13 things.

Nobody has done weekend update right since Colin Quinn. Fallon and Fey were awful for reasons that I will state below...

Everyone I know thinks he's ass. He has the same problem as Tina Fey though Fey is far more gag worthy. They both try way to hard to look ironic when they tell jokes. It's as if they're saying, "Hey, look at how outrageous I'm being! Isn't that hilarious?" No it isn't. You're a douchebag. That comedy style basically made 30 Rock unwatchable.

Moss 02-27-2014 08:01 PM

Norm McDonald was my favorite for weekend update. He wad fearless.

I agree with everything you're saying here except that I liked Seth Meyers in the Weekend Update anchor chair (minus most of the "guests"). Although I like Amy Poehler in several things, I didn't like her doing WU for all the camera-winking.

I thought Seth was the best WU anchor since Dennis Miller, but more from the left instead of the right.

I hate and I do mean *hate* 30 Rock

"Everyone you know" is not as large a sample size as you might think. And 30 Rock, unwatchable? It's one of the most critically acclaimed comedies on TV of the past decade. Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon hardly try to be outrageous, either, though I get that their style is similar.

Agreed. Hearing him call Texas "Nazi Germany" is my first memory of SNL. I still cherish it.

Critics can suck my ass. If they think 30 Rock is funny then they're not worthy of human consideration and should be forcibly euthanized.

And I didn't say Jimmy and Tina tried to be outrageous, I said they try to look ironic. That expression on Tina Fey's face and that self-consciously ironic way she delivers a punchline make me shake with loathing.

Paul Smeenus 02-28-2014 10:55 AM

Zero laughs from me watching 30 Rock. None. Zip zilch nada..

And let's not forget Tracy Morgan. His only redeeming quality was the thirty seconds max that he'd do occasionally on Martin. Any longer and he just becomes annoying.

butthead aka 216 02-28-2014 11:04 AM

norm = over rated. hes one of those guys ppl laugh at somewhat forced and uncomfortably cause ppl now hes supposed to be funny and they should laugh. been that way for 20 yrs. he was kinda funny back in his hey day but always a little over rated. his style gets really old for me and i dont find him real clever. how anyone can listen to him say 'ya know' 1000 times thru a set baffles me

tracy morgan has never been funny

i dont watch 30 rock

FRED HALE SR. 02-28-2014 11:23 AM

I watch 30 rock occassionally. I find it funny. I don't like Macdonald or Fallon in the slightest. I love Tina Fey and WOULD in a heartbeat.

30 Rock would have been cancelled after 3 episodes if it even lasted that long.

Also critical praise isn't even enough to save a show. So regardless of his opinion there were many other people that found it funny enough and gave it decent ratings.

True. Same could be said for a lot of (IMO) horribly unfunny shows.

touche.

I have no idea why Two and a Half Men is such a ratings monster but that show is so ****ing awful.

Goofle 02-28-2014 02:32 PM

I like BOTH.

shocking.

Yeah, I loved 30 Rock and kept up with each new episode as it aired. I even watched it on Netflix to re-watch some of my favorite episodes but all three of those other shows I listed are a no go.

Goofle 02-28-2014 03:19 PM

I cannot tell you how many times I watched Tracy calling Toofer a "Black bastard". That shit cracked me up too much.

I think Two and a Half Men is just easy watching for me. I am quite a snob when it comes to TV (much more than music in fact) but there's something about it's completely obtuse humor that clicks with me.

YorkeDaddy 02-28-2014 04:15 PM

My personal least favorite is Big Bang Theory. Never liked it at all tbh

Same here. It's a dumb show, and the comedy style is cliched and lame, but they do it well enough that it's good to watch when I have no desire to do anything but stare at a screen, veg out, and chuckle like a moron every couple of minutes. Besides, the one girl Charlie had, Chelsea I think, was ridiculous. I would gladly sit through a half hour of unwatchable crap just to stare at her tits.

Damn it, I don't think I can put it up here, but she's fine.

Black Francis 05-09-2018 09:55 AM

Falon is fun not funny. Conan is both.

Frownland 05-09-2018 09:55 AM

Conan's too safe to be funny.

Black Francis 05-09-2018 10:13 AM

Shut up.
