Spot on Carpe, my mother is hooked on cellphone games and my mother was never a gamer and it's like you said, my mother started with angry birds but then she moved on to other more challenging puzzle games.

The vg industry is not actually easy to define, there are different kind of gamers with different kind of needs, i wasn't really aware of this until i saw this vid that really put things in perspective for me.

I plug Game theory ALOT, but that is because they break it down to the most important details.

it showed me im an autonomous gamer more than anything else, and coming 2nd are the multi player games, i like those as well.

And PC gamers are frickin snobs! always looking down on console gamers just cause they have better RTS games.
cause to me that's really the only advantage they have, games like WoW, LoL, Dota
They have a few others but consoles have good games too, which they dismiss as inferior to Pc games.

And if ppl like me say they prefer older games is mostly because of nostalgia, we played these games when were young and they became part of our upbringing, but are they better games than new games? not likely but they mean more to us.
I see it a lot on forums and YouTube videos. Hell, Cracked even did an article on why the video game industry is going to crash.

I'm not getting pissed off at people being nostalgic. I'm not even pissed at all. I'm just concerned. It seems to me that gamers are getting more cynical and jaded. Previous generations have been met with mostly optimism and excitement. This generation of gaming, as far as I can see, is being met with a lot of pessimism.

I don't really understand it. I think gaming is just fine. I prefer older games myself, but I'm personally excited to see what the future holds.

Fair point, i agree i came from playing Maniac mansion on Nes, to Skyrim so im excited to see what they come up with next.

But we are used to those games now, and it's kinda good we don't settle and want more because then they'll give us more, but it's true, i remember in my nes days we didn't demand as much from games as we do now.

I'll just give my two cents about a couple of BF's concerns:

@Goat Simulator: I seriously doubt that it's hype will last for long. It's just a silly little parody of the simulators that have been popping up recently that's fun to watch for an hour at the very most.

@Variety: Maybe it's because I'm incredibly out of touch at this point, but I've learned to ignore the CoDs and GTAs and I'm seeing plenty of variety these days. RPGs, shmups, SRPGS, survival and action horror games, visual novels, platformers, FPSs, RTSs, MMOs, puzzle games, Action RPGs, adventure games, racing games, stealth, the list goes on. You're just not going to find out that some genres exist or are even still a thing by just looking at Gamestop's and Wal-Mart's shelves. I still don't get it when people who like games say that they also love to truly explore music, film, and literature, but then say that the majority of modern games are CoD clones and refuse to explore the medium like the situation's somehow different.

Gaming has become more mainstream, and as people begin with something as simple as Mafia Wars or Farmville or something, they start wondering what else is out there. They dig deeper. Soon enough some of them are playing games that even the most elitist gamer can point a thumbs up at. Developers know this and will continue to cater to the majority of course, with little bull**** games, but they will also keep in mind those of us who want something with a little more substance.... and those who might find themselves becoming interested.

High-powered computers and accessories for PC gaming, on the other hand, may be dying in sales. I prefer a PC myself but I know an awful lot of people who primarily use tablets nowadays. Likely we'll see bigger and bigger increases in price from companies like Alienware until PC gaming is the elite club of well-to-do players they've always fancied themselves to be.
I would love to have Alienware. PC gaming to me seems like it's dying. The consoles seem to be way more popular. I personally am a PC gamer but would definitely be interested in getting either PS or XBOX eventually.

Maybe you're younger or something, but I think gaming optimism reached a peak when games went 3D. Everyone pretty much **** themselves, and then a year after that we were kind of over it and the bitching began. Since then there's always been bitching about how the next console didn't look all that great, or how the start-up games were lame, or how the gaming industry was dumbing down games, etc.

You really don't need to get an Alienware PC in order to play good PC games. Shit you can build a comparable gaming PC for either the same cost as an Xbox One, or for a little less, and really there's only maybe 2-3 games that coming out within the next year that can really tout the whole "next gen grafix!!!!" remark.

As far as PC gamers being snobs, eh... yeah I guess that does kind of ring true for some groups, but it's not like there isn't reason to be. The rise in popularity of console gaming has not been kind to PC gaming, with shit port after shit port, the removal of option settings on things like Field of View sliders (incredibly important for FPS games on PC). I don't think it gives fans an excuse to be dicks to each other online, but just look around any forum and you'll see most people don't need much in the way of excuses to be a dick to someone else on the Internet.

@Chrysalis

Cool nick, you got it from the Nes game, right?

i already acknowledged there is variety but keep in mind that not every console has alot of variety in their game library, you get 20 fps shooters and 3 rpgs, there is favoritism to the trendy games, to the games that will sell more.

i had Far cry 3 a game alot of ppl liked, but i barely played it, ive played COD and Halo too, ive tried to jump in the bandwagon of some the popular games but they are not for me.

And there is alternative to those games but it can be harder to find cause they don't promote those sort of game as much as the big sellers, like you mentioned, you might not find these games on a wal mart shell, but i bet you, you find a COD game with no problem.

So yea, variety does exist but it's not always as noticeable, it's only noticeable if a game becomes huge like Dark souls or Skyrim, and how many clones are they of these games? not many.

They stand as individual titles of a formula that is not yet exploited as war fps games.

I enjoyed video games much more when they weren't for the masses.

Everything is being dumbed down so all the content is easily accessible to the masses instead of having games that are unbeatable for people who suck at them.

I play computer games, so I can't speak on behalf of consoles. Modern day MMORPGs are so carebear it makes me cry. I miss not being able to beat games like Altered Beast and Willow when I was a child. It never stopped me from enjoying them.

It's like this new generation of kids where everyone gets a ****ing trophy and bullying is the worse thing in the world. These are the people video games are being designed for and it's aggravating.

No skill = no trophy bitch.

Japanese MMORPGs are still boring grindfests that makes your eyes bleed. I feel like that is the type of games you would be into.

I welcome the current change to MMOs. You have to evolve and change over time instead of being stuck in the past of being hard for no good reason and stupidly grindy. I don't cherish the early days of MMOs at all. You completely lost me on that topic.
