They might be good films, but there's lots of gore in them, which I loathe. You might think I'm nuts, but I found "The Blair Witch Project" amazing: no sophistication of FX at all, no gore either, and then it left me wondering... the 2nd part was despicable though.

Throwing up watching a 'mystery'? This whole post is a conundrum. At any rate, I would suggest Evil Dead (2013), The Others,The Cabin in the Woods, stuff like that. imdb will serve you well... find what you like, then look for related things there. |

why would you suggest the remake of Evil Dead? that shit has some gruesome gringe worthy gore type scenes. Definitely wouldn't be his thing.

It's not a conundrum at all. Poe or Lovecraft wrote horror stories and there was absolutely no gore whatsoever in them.
So yes indeed: horror, without gore. "A Tale of 2 Sisters" (I've seen the Korean version) is a flawless example of this. |

The Haunting of Julia starring Mia Farrow. Also, Kwaidan, directed by Kobayashi.
The Haunting of Julia/Full Circle: Kwaidan: I'll also give a special mention to Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, because a couple of those scared the living shit out of me. Yeah, that trailer looks innocent enough, but there are a couple that are just...dear God.
