Tell me about your favorite Podcast!

I love Podcasts and I need to get some new ones.

Personally, I love RadioLab NYC. Each show is a topic, and they cover three stories based on that topic. The most recent one I heard is called Blood. Overall a pretty blah episode, but the third story is mind blowing.

Its about the Blood-ring where hospitals harvest blood for what they need then sell to other needy hospitals (mostly New York).

So whats your favorite Podcast?

Exo 08-10-2013 10:38 PM

Yeah, Radiolab is pretty much the go-to podcast for me when I want to learn something awesome. If you can, find their episode called "loops'. It's fascinating.

Other podcasts that are essential for starting out are This American Life and The Moth for just overall amazing stories and reports on interesting things. For comedy fans check out The Nerdist with Chris Hardick. He has great guests such as Mel Brooks, Tom Hanks, Robert Kirkman, Josh Homme, and Patton Oswalt. Other good comedy podcasts are Doug Loves Movie and the Joe Rogan Show.

TheBig3 08-10-2013 10:45 PM

I've heard loops! Was that the one with the Mobius Strip?

Planet Money is also really interesting. I expected it to be boring, but its pretty entertaining.

Janszoon 08-11-2013 05:46 AM

I love Radiolab and have listened to every single episode of it. I do feel like it's had a bit of a decline in quality in the past few months though. I don't know what that's all about.

I'm also a huge fan of the movie review show Filmspotting. Not only do the hosts do a great job commenting on both old and new cinema but they're also pretty funny at times, especially when they reenact movie scenes in their Massacre Theater segment.

Astronomer 08-11-2013 07:17 AM

A lot of my favourite podcasts are Australian so they're probably not relevant to other members but I'll share anyway...

Hack - Australian current affairs and issues and stuff.

Nerdzilla - Nerdy, geek stuff.

StarStuff - Space/universe/science stuff.

Unearthed - New and little-known Australian music and stuff.

I might have to check out Radiolab?!

I forgot about Filmspotting. Slash filmcast is also a great one.

Not quite of the same calibre as most of the ones that have already been mentioned but mine is:

Internet Box

bob. 08-11-2013 05:32 PM

thanks guys

i suggest looking into Hollywood Babble On

a weekly live podcast with Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman (who is beyond hilarious)....basically an insider look at new movies, movies that will suck, major geek news and celebrity bashing :)....with a shit load of horrible dick jokes....mindless and educational at the same time

If you want to hear the best damn Radiolab episode, check out Colors. Seriously. As I mentioned above I feel like they've lost steam a little lately, but episodes like "Colors" are definitely examples of them doing everything right.

Is that the one with the shrimp?

I don't remember them mentioning shrimp but it's possible they mention them in the segment about how different species perceive color. It's also the one that has the segment about the weird color descriptions in ancient texts.

bob. 08-11-2013 06:44 PM

i download Blood, Colors, Loops and Guts (seeing as mine are AGAIN trying to kill me...this may be interesting)

and i download four random ones from Filmspotting

from someone who drives for a living....i really appreciate these :)

I have another suggestion that, if you have any interest in history, is perfect for long drives: Dan Carlin's Hardcore History.

Yes, it has a dumb name, but it's a great podcast. A great intro, if you're willing to invest four and a half hours, is the "Prophets of Doom" episode, which is about the insane religious fervor, violence and civil war that gripped the German city of Munster during part of the protestant reformation. Some other of the podcast's highlights are the five-part "Wrath of the Khans" series of episodes and the four-part "Ghosts of the Ostfront".

bob. 08-11-2013 07:05 PM

ohhhh i am alllllll over that :)

thanks again

It is the one with the shrimp. It comes up because dongs have 2 cones, humans have 3, butterflies have 5, and that weird, giant-clawed shrimp in the barrier reef has 15.

Dongs have 2 cones?

unintentional, but I'm not editing it.

Dogs. Though, I can't speak about the cone-count on dongs.

bob. 08-12-2013 12:34 PM

i like to think that my dong is color blind :)

so yeah this show is amazingly good....and i cannot believe you forgot about the shrimp Janszoon

and i agree the concept that people of ancient times may have been color blind simply because they had no way to reproduce certain colors was fascinating

started the Prophets of Doom and i'm really digging how this guy tells the story

again thanks to all of you for these great suggestions

He's really great. No gimmicks whatsoever, just a guy who is extremely good at telling historical tales in a compelling way. And that story is really fucked up. I'll be interested in hearing what you think of it when it's over.

bob. 08-14-2013 11:15 AM

my first reaction was...why don't i already know about this

i mean this is in many ways the first death cult and probably one of the craziest....and then on top of that the Catholic punishment is insane....i love the fact that they were punished to 60 minutes of pain then death

i just listened to the one about the Spanish American war....again fascinating and a period of history i obviously knew nothing about....Teddy Roosevelt was a fucking dick!.....i'm downloading the 6 parter about the Roman republic now :)

TheBig3 09-09-2013 07:29 PM

As music folks, you guys reaaaaaaaally need to listen to this:

Dawn of Midi - Radiolab

Dr_Rez 09-09-2013 07:44 PM

Im sorry you all have tried to asnwer Big 3;s question but only 1 answer is correct. The Joe Rogan podcast reins supreme.

http://thebestofpodcasts.files.wordp...jr-d4udyyv.jpg

He has amazing guests and talks about so many issues in depth.

The guests (1 per show) have to pick 8 songs to take to a desert island with them, a book and a luxury. Let me know if it works in the US?

Radio Free Burrito - Wil Wheaton talks about music, life in general. I used to really like these, but they have been very infrequent, the last one was February 2013, so I have lost interest.

I'm up to around the thirties of Critical Role campaign 2 videos but it's been months since I watched CR so I'm listening to the campaign 2 CR podcast from the beginning at work to relive what I've already seen. Hours and hours and hours of content and I'm just lost in the middle of it all and I ****ing love it.

SGR 08-29-2020 07:59 PM

Anyone a fan of Sam Harris's podcasts? I think they're called Waking Up. They used to be called something else, which I can't for the life of me remember at this moment.

I'd give it a shot, do you have an episode that highlights the best of the show?

It’s behind a paywall.

He also gets really prissy when anyone disagrees with him.

Saying Harris's name somehow summons him.

The arrogance of a paywalled podcast is blowing my mind. I mean if you have over 50 listeners, SquareSpace, Blue Apron, or Caspter are required to give you a sponsorship.

OccultHawk 11-02-2020 11:09 AM

I recommend listening to the latest This American Life

The Unreality of Now

Stat given: 40% of guns bought this year were bought by first time buyers.

Mindy 11-02-2020 11:50 AM

I put some on my blog at the end but don't really listen to them because I just would rather be listening to music. The Lupe & Royce Show seems nice but havent even listened yet. Then Gary vee has some that are nice. Joe Rogan gets cool people on his but I've only watched the full 3-hour show when Elon Musk was on...

You never burn out?

The Batlord 11-02-2020 09:35 PM

Why would you burn out? There's many hours of podcasts to listen to per hour. It's a ****ing smorgasbord.
