most of those square games were virtually the same as their snes counterparts just with some really ugly polygons
Driver? What did driver do that was so groundbreaking? ill give you gran turismo. Ocarina of time added a lock on mechanic, mario 64 was the first true 3d camera. Goldeneye was the first good fps tailored to consoles |

The Square games are masterpieces of the JRPG genre, nearly every single one of them. But since we want to get so technical, Goldeneye wasn't the first FPS on consoles and Ocarina wasn't the first game with lock on. I'll give you Mario 64 with the camera though. |

My favourite consoles from each era that I've played have been Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, PS2, and then PS3.
I'm one of the few that preferred the Genesis to the SNES, and that's probably because I owned a Genesis and only played the SNES at friends' houses, but some of those games on that system were absolutely incredible (ToeJam & Earl, Strider, etc.). N64 was the furthest ahead of its competition and I consider it the best console ever. The sheer amount of classic games it had, along with the replay value that a lot of them provided, was absolutely incredible. I can't even tell you how much time I invested into that thing growing up. Hell, the Mario Party games alone probably took a year of my life. PS2 was awesome and the best system for its generation, but the GameCube was great as well due to some amazing exclusives (Zelda, Resident Evil 4, etc.). Everyone always seems to praise the PS2 a lot, and rightfully so, but GameCube was definitely underrated. I'm kind of indifferent in the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 debate. Both have their positives, but I'm just a little more tied to PS3's exclusives, notably Uncharted. |

I acknowledged those games were groundbreaking and have a big legacy man. I was never trying to discredit their importance, but PSX has big name games of their own that were super important and influential too, and that I personally like better. |

arbitrary? they were the pillars of modern game design.
Playstation games were very good, but were based on what nintendo had already acheived, especially spyro and crash bandicoot. Titles you listed were RPGS, very well made rpgs, but not innovative or as good as paper mario (lets be honest). |

I think the PS2 was the most well-rounded console. Good amount of playstation franchises, and a huuuuuge range of 3rd party titles. All ages, and all levels of commitment to self-proclaimed 'hardcore gamer-ness'.
