The serial killer plotline. Made me feel like I was watching an episode of CSI. Total immersion killer.

These would be my season rankings: 3 > 2 > 1 > 4 > 5

I just liked the Barksdale crew better than the Stanfield crew

I still haven't seen The Wire. I need to do something about that.

5th season definitely had some problems, and I will agree that the serial killer plotline really did kill the immersion and realism of the show a wee bit. I think that was done dilberately though, to poke fun at the sensationalization of the typical serial killer motif while completely ignoring the very real serial killer who is nowhere near as "sophisticated" as say the BTK Killer.

I will definitely say that I prefered the Barksdale Crew, but at the same time we actually got a glimpse into their lives and saw their motivations, we didn't really get to see that all that much with the Stanfield Crew except with Michael.

Which HBO shows have you seen and what did you think of them?

You may be right about the serial killer plotline, it just felt like a departure to what the show was all about in the first place (namely, verisimilitude). Although to be fair, "hamsterdam" was pretty unrealistic as well, yet that was my favorite section of the whole show. Another part of season 5 that bored me was the newsroom, which didn't feel as compelling as the previously examined constructs of society.

That said, this is all really nitpicking of what is bottom-line a fantastic show. I personally prefer The Sopranos (I love the mafia themes and can't think of a stronger cast of characters), but I was also watching it when it first came out and was kind of aboard that hype train, something that I missed with The Wire, which I didn't catch up to until much later. So I may be biased a bit in that area, I'm just happy to live in a time where two great shows can co-exist and we can have pointless debates about which is better

From your list?

Tales from the Crypt—One of my favorite shows when I was growing up.
Oz—Never seen it.
Sex and the City—I've seen many episodes because my wife loves it. I'm not really a fan but I can appreciate that the writing was pretty good.
The Sopranos—I've seen a decent amount of episodes here and there. I've always liked it and have been meaning to watch the whole series forever.
Six Feet Under—Never seen it.
The Wire—Never seen it, really want to though.
Deadwood—Never seen it.
Entourage—Seen a few episodes. Wasn't impressed.
Curb Your Enthusiasm—Seen a decent amount of episodes. Extremely overrated show imo.
Game of Thrones—Never seen it, but it's high on my list of shows to check out.

Also, even though it's not on your list: Boardwalk Empire—Loved the first season, but I haven't seen anything else.

get on Game of Thrones stat tbh and the 2nd season of Boardwalk! It was really, really really good. I think it was better than the first.

I don't have HBO so I've been waiting for Boardwalk season 2 to come out on DVD. :/

Game of Thrones I'm planning on getting on ASAP.

Boardwalk was literally number 11 on my list, but I decided to keep it at 10 cause it could go on forever otherwise.

In addition to the Wire Jansz, I'd definitely check out Oz (the earlier seasons at least), Deadwood, and The Sopranos. I've yet to see Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones or Six Feet Under but I want to get to them all at some point.
