I think it's kind of dubious to humanize the bad guys from the last movie because their cartoonish evilness was the only thing that kept you rooting and high fiving your guy friends when Liam Neeson disposed of them in increasingly violent and creative ways. I guess it's trying to make up for inadvertently making the bad guys more and more ethnic as Neeson climbs up the bad guy ladder, culminating in the murder of a Sheikh on his murder/ rape yacht (spoiler alert).
Personally I have nothing but intense disgust for the sex slavery black market, so getting to see Darkman brutalize anybody complicit in said activities is what some people would say as a guilty pleasure, but at the same time it's going to be a little harder now that the film is playing on the other side's personal life by showing family and perhaps even reasons why they got swept up in such a seedy and despicable aspect of organized crime. |

That's a very good analysis. I didn't really think about it like that, but yeah, the black market aspect of it was definitely terrible. I think at least among my friends we're pretty much for the "increasingly violent and creative ways." More-so creative, I don't like intense torture/gore/that kind of stuff.
But I definitely agree about what you said regarding personal life, villain or not, I'd prefer their personal lives to be kept out of the movie. |

Aww ****... I actually think if there was going to be a sequel this would have to be the direction they took. I'm not sure there is too much humanizing going on here... They still seem pretty sleazy to me. Plus, it's the most interesting man in the world coming after him. He doesn't always drink beer when he is taking his revenge, but when he does he drinks Dos Equis.
Now, I'm not sure this will be as satisfying as the first one. It was balls to the wall Liam kicking ass with nothing to lose. If they can recreate that feeling, I'll be happy.

I found the first film boring as **** TBH. Bourne knock off fight scenes with an ending telegraphed from the opening moments and a plot that was predictable too. Direction was really good and Neeson was solid but take away Neeson, Besson and studio backing this film would be in your local bargain bins.
