the problem with Inferno is that you need a team for each toon, because the amount of clicking required to beat each level would not be sustainable by one human wrist.

The Forums only represent roughly 10% of the population. I know roughly 13 people playing and only one of them has selected the Barbarian so far. (as a man of course, I'm sure people are screwing around on them.)

I don't see the benefit of being melee in this game yet. Ranged seems so much easier (having not played it).

"Roughly 10%"

What? According to who? I would actually guess that this figure is significantly smaller. Closer to 1%, maybe.

And let's analyze your polling logic for a bit. So you're saying that, in regards to the popularity of the Barbarian, a poll on the game's official website, in which thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of people voted, somehow provides a less reliable analysis than an anecdotal sample of "roughly 13 people" you know personally?

In any case, I've only seen one stream of Inferno mode and it was from a European team of four, each rolling a different class as you said. I would imagine that is indeed the most effective way to trudge through inferno.

Though I admit, from what I watched (and it was only Act 1), Inferno doesn't look very fun. Every 1-2 minutes of creeping through a Dungeon, the team would run into a pack of unusuals or an elite mob, stacked with 3-4 unique abilities (eg Waller, Vortex and Molten-- HOLY ****), and then they would spend 5 minutes spamming the same 3 attacks that each player had deemed most effective. They also died, a LOT.

And I understand the counterargument here-- "if Inferno doesn't look fun, don't play it! It's meant to be difficult." But here's the thing. EVEN IN Inferno, when they killed the boss of Act 1, I hadn't seen a single unique item drop. Where is the great loot? Andariel in Hell would often drop 2-3 uniques. I don't want to have to suffer through Inferno to achieve worthwhile items...

Also, beat the game last night (on normal). The developers were saying that the fourth and final difficulty, Inferno, is insanely-omg-what-the-****-DIFFICULT and that no one on the dev team had been able to beat it prior to release. That being said, I give those crazy Asians a month TOPS to beat Inferno, and then another two months to beat Inferno Hardcore.
I picked up the guide when I got the game. Looking at the HP and monster levels based on the difficulties it breaks down like this.

On normal the base line monsters are level 1, on Nightmare 31, on Hell 51, and on Inferno 61. The player cap is level 60.

As for the ramp up in difficulty The Wretched Queen is essentially the first 'boss' type fight. On normal she's got 18-24hp, Nightmare 5718-7624, Hell 124 000-166 000, and on Inferno... 943 000 - 1 257 000.

So yeah... almost 10 times as many hit points. I guess it's something to do when you're maxed out.

As Big3s concern to the benefit of melee, I think it depends on the situation. In solo play I agree it's a hassle, but in a group it can allow for some nice cooperative action. Like yesterday when we tackled that spider cave, I'd do the big melee swings, not much damage, but then the mobs would have their attack and movement reduced by 25%, which made it easier for you to spam range damage and slaughter them all.

Yes. Polls are horribly inaccurate, especially if they only were allowed one vote. (I don't know what the nature of the poll was). Furthermore, what someone thought they'd like, and what they're playing currently are two very different things.

I think most folks are playing 3 to 4 toons. And the 10% count is from what the Blues routinely suggest is the percentage for the WoW forums.

So I just started a character yesterday. Won't be playing much, but it's not even my game so that okay.

Diablo II pretty much introduced me to RPGs and "serious" video games in general. I was a druid back in the day, and loved it. When I got into the game, I remembered that there used to be a knight or paladin-esque type class, and I wanted to be that. And then I got in the game and... there were five classes. And the only one that was a close-range melee fighter was the barbarian. "What the heck!" said I.

I chose the witch doctor, because it looked druidish. It's really more of the Necromancer, but whatever. It turns out to be a kind of crowd controller. I'm not really interested in that, so I guess I'm going to go right back and make a barbarian.

To be fair, though, I only played for an hour or so. I really don't know anything about any of the classes. What classes are you guys liking the best?

The Monk wasn't more Paladin like than the Barbarian? I played a Paladin in D2 and I play a Monk now. I'd say they have a lot in common.

I really wasn't sure. I would have picked the monk, but I had only heard negative opinions on it, during the little I researched the game.

I think it was already mentioned here but during the beta I discovered that some of the Monks abilities made me a bit queasy, as he would jolt around the screen with this one teleporting strike in particular. Additionally, a lot of the monks attacks seem to root you in place and I can't stand that-- I have to be constantly moving when playing Diablo-type games.

For that reason I would suggest you give the Barbarian a try. Being able to leap-- literally-- into the midst of a pack and cleave them apart with one big strike is very satisfying.

I played open beta. I think Diablo III is the best game I have ever played. I'm going to play Wizard or monk, but i think wizard is better then the other. I let you playing wizard or monk. Those classes, I think, are the best.

Just wanted to pop in and say that the barbarian freaking rocks. I don't have a lot of opportunity to play, but I'm having a lot of fun when I do.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys listen to when playing? I bring up last.FM or Grooveshark and use that, because honestly, the music in the game is not exactly amazing. It's the same spooky folk melody, over and over and over. And it's good a few times, but eventually you get bored.

I've mostly been listening to swing and folk so far... for some reason. A lot of Ben Sollee, which doesn't fit the game at all, but I don't care.
