Personally I think there is little comparison, the books have the depth that the tv series just can't compete against, the books are hard to put down once you start reading them, whereas the TV Series to be honest is just ok, had they had the budget of LOTR then it may have been different.

I literally knew nothing about this series other than that it had a popular TV series and that it had some kind of a medieval theme. A few days ago my friend brought it up and told me a bit more about the books and I was intrigued by how in-depth he said it was, along with the multiple POVs. Picked up the first book yesterday and I've been completely hooked. It's a shame I didn't start reading them sooner.
I plan on reading the books that are out and then maybe watching the show. I was obsessive about not seeing anything from the films when I read the Harry Potter series, and I think it would be better if I did the same thing for this series. I actually still haven't watched all of the HP movies, but I know I'll eventually have to check out Game of Thrones as it's on HBO. |

As far as watching the show and reading the books, I would almost advise watching the show first in order to get all your visual references ingrained in your head so when someone says "Ser Rodrik Cassel" in the book you know exactly who they're talking about it. It also eliminates the bias you'll inevitably have when the writers of the show change something, as you have no frame of reference to compare it to, that's what I've done for most of the Alan Moore movie adaptations and it has allowed me to enjoy both the movie and the comic (with the exception of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003) which was just pretty shit).
