Personally I'd say you should watch the show and enjoy that version for what it is, and then read the books and enjoy them for what they are.

The show is a better piece of narrative. Just know you're not going get as much depth and background. Having said that, start with the show, and if it interests you, hit the books.

Just be aware that Martin never met a tirade about food he didn't like. And that all of book 4 is as boring as ****.

Its always a race/gender thing with you.

If you meant the bankers, they don't have to be Braavosi. Just as Rockland Trust isn't always in Rockland, neither to are the bankers of a place necessarily from that place.
