As for least, I'd definitely say Viserys and Joffrey.

The others I'm unsure about but I've started to take a liking to Robb as well. I'm a bit intrigued by the Lannisters, but I don't know why. They have this subtle depth and insecurity that makes you question how they really feel about the situation.
The main characters of the first book are quite limited to the Starks, Tyrion and Danaerys. By book book two they really start expanding on the characters. Jon and Tyrion normally seem to be the most popular amongst readers in the first book. Jon because he's an outsider and Tyrion for his wit and humour. Eddard is really the only 'True Lord' in terms of decency amongst a nest of vipers when he gets to King's Landings. As Hermoine said Jamie Lannister is the character to watch for, he becomes something very special.

I'm a huge fan of some of the fringe characters as well, Sandor and Gregor Clegane are great and it's a pity that Viserys was killed off, I liked how he abused his sister and walked around in a daze dreaming of delusions of grandeur

About to start book two and can't wait even though I read it about a year ago.

Since Jaime doesn't have much of a part in the first book, I'm really glad to hear that. He's one of my favourite characters so far in the tv series.

Just don't tell me anything. :P

Maybe we should have whoever started the main post say how far people are in the books/tv series so we don't spoil things?

I'm about 2/3 through A Feast for Crows. Not sure why so many people think it's the weak link of the series. I think all 4 so far have been pretty comparable. It almost seems like one big plot advancement, fleshing out the characters and plotlines that have been hinted at or neglected throughout the first few books, but it has kept my interest the whole way through. Doing that with almost no presence from many of the main characters in the series (Jon, Tyrion, Daenerys, Bran) is pretty impressive.

I've always wondered why people were so down on the 4th book so much, I suspect it's because the third one was all action with A LOT whereas AFFC's is a bit more reserved. That and a lot of the really popular characters like Tyrion, Jon Snow, and Daenerys didn't have chapters in it. Honestly if I had to rank them they'd go like this:

1. A Clash of Kings
2. A Feast For Crows
3. A Game of Thrones
4. A Storm of Swords
5. A Dance With Dragons

Too much happened in A Storm of Swords that I found it really hard to keep track of, especially in Essos. Way too many names were dropped and characters introduced that it was just a sensory overload. When so much of it was called back in A Dance With Dragons I got really confused on what happened and resorted to the awoiaf.westeros.org wiki which helped clear things up, but also spoiled some things.

This is my favourite book series ever, slightly above The Wheel of Time and The Malazan Book of the Fallen. Especially book 3 is absolutely fantastic, though I love the first three to bits, really. Book 4 was very good, but a bit on the depressing side, as I realized there was no way back for any of the characters by now (plus Brienne is a rather dull POV), while book 5 was hugely entertaining, if not quite up to the standards of the first three. Overall, bloody fantastic, though, by the gods!

I've watched season 1 of the HBO show, and while it was interesting and well made, it's a big pile of puke compared to the books. Even if I try to imagine the books don't exist, it's still quite a bit below the best HBO shows.

i think i would side with Pete on book 4.....although it took me a moment to get over the omission of so many main characters....the stories that continue in that book are the arcs i'm most looking forward to in the coming books....esp Sansa....who went from zero to absolute bad ass in my mind....she is seriously up there for favorite character now

omg yes Sansa!!!! Such a perfect, bad ass character while still remaining feminine and good at heart. Ugh she's just perfect. I just realised recently she's definitely my favourite character and her becoming Queen and Arya being Lord Commander of the Kingsguard is my endgame.
