Got the series on Netflix. Watching the first episode right now, will report back with my feelings. I better be blown the hell away, what with you guys making so much noise about it.

I didn't really like the series until a few episodes in myself. Now I'm loving it.

I don't think you will, the series just doesn't have the depth of the books, you need to absorb yourself in the books and then just watch the TV series as an additional extra.

Okay, so here we go.
It starts off really well. Despite the fact I have no idea what is going on, it is still an awesome atmosphere. Good, confusing stuff. The Winterfell people and the King and his people seem rowdy, but cool. The blonde incestuous brother is creepy as hell, and boy do I feel bad for his sister. The Prince of Persia-esque tribe is horrifying and terrible. And holy CRAP there was a lot of sex going on. It seemed like half of what was being discussed/shown/thought about was sex! Honestly, I don't really think it adds anything of importance and is kind of stupid. :/ All in all, it was... okay. I'm going to watch the second episode when I get home from work at around 1 am, and will push on, since everyone says that it gets better. Will report back later with my thoughts on the second episode.

I would think that the best thing would be to see the series, then read the books. That way, you'll be able to enjoy the series without being too critical (from reading the books) and then you can enjoy the books and their added depth and detail afterwards.

When somebody is not crazy on a series, it doesn't always give them that much motivation to read the books.

Apparently the next two seasons are going to be dedicated to A Storm of Swords which has me wondering if they're really going to knuckle down and include all the material from that book. There's a lot to get through even if you do strip down some of the ancillary plots but they're also introducing Jojen and Meera Reed in this season, which has me curious as to how they're going to do that, unless they were already on their way to Winterfell. |
