I haven't joined either side yet, as well.
I'm wondering if I should just wait until I finish all the other quests or not, or does it matter? Like, I'd rather not have to deal with imperials at every turn, if I join the Stormcloaks, while I'm trying to do unrelated quests.

They will not recognize you. You will not be bothered at all.

The concerns Freebase brings up is pretty much why I've been hesitant to join the imperials. It would just be such a hassle to have to fight every stormcloak I meet during my travels. Happy to hear that's not an issue!

lvl 37 Khajit archer/assassin/jack of all trades here, roughly ~56h into the game. My main skills, archery, one handed, light armor, smithing are around 80-85, enchanting, sneak, block, lockpick, speech around 65-70. 25 dragon souls collected so far. I also just joined the dark brotherhood.
I've been a stormcloak from the moment I could and only once got attacked by some random imperials - walking around imperial cities, talking to imperial officials - all can be done without any fear they'll recognize you. Assuming Imperial quests look similar, this faction quest line has been the most fun for me. Gathering incriminating evidence, attacking weapons/silver shipments and finally - assaulting strongholds is super fun, if a bit repetitive. Wave after wave of respawning imperial soldiers appear only to be smashed to death by either my Mace of Molag Bal or an epic ebony sword that deals extra 12 cold and stamina damage...it gets kind of silly to be honest, but is amusing. Anyway, except for the Mace of Molag Bal (which is pretty awesome) and teh Mehrunes' Razor (that has a whopping 38 dmg with one handed weapons around 85 and upgraded to epic level, plus a chance to instant kill any opponent which despite numerous tries, never happened. Anyway, it's a crap weapon) I haven't found any more daedric artifacts yet... anyone found a bow ? This epic glass bow +25 fire dmg I'm currently using is fun, but I'm looking for something.. well, more unique. Also, roughly around lvl 34 Elder Dragons started appearing instead of those weak ass blood dragons, and they are a lot more challenging. At first I was carrying around 2 sets of shield+boots that granted 80-90% fire/cold resistance, then I sold it all as the dragons stopped being challenging .... I'm thinking about going back to something like that. |

By the way, why all the love for the Stormcloaks?
I mean the Stormcloaks are just fascist warmongers who want to keep Skyrim to themselves. In so doing, they would weaken both Skyrim and the Empire against the coming war against the Dominion. Plus, lots of Nords support the Empire and have joined it's ranks and Talos, the guy the Stormcloaks want to worship, was the man Tiber Septim who founded the empire in the first place. Undoubtedly the Empire is not all good either, but I consider it the better option. Am I the only one who thinks that way?

And regardless of the fact that each side tells their story through their own lense, it was just a matter of chance that I happened to go with the Stormcloak when escaping Helgen, and just went down that path. (even though I still haven't taken a side) But still, I'm wondering if it even matters in the end. Is the ending like Fallout endings, where the choices you made play a part in the end? Is there even an ending? I'm pretty confused about that aspect of TES games, as this is my first one.

I finished the main storyline first (i suggest everyone save this for last as so far it was the most epic quest I've come across) and except for one instance, none of the guilds or factions even come up.

I just joined the Legion, largely due to what Tore has already mentioned. Ulfric's reasons for waging civil war are simply too childish and ill-conceived to be taken seriously.
Also, I have a new rule. Whenever I see anything Thalmor, I kill it immediately. |
