I'm surprised, I thought like 95% of people play in first person, but here at least that doesn't seem to be. Maybe cause I'm so used to playing Morrowind and Oblivion in first person (third person sucked in those games) but I find myself pretty uncoordinated in third person. The only time I ever use it is to admire my armor, or just for the occasional different perspective on a battle.

Third person has improved a lot for Skyrim, and as well as finding combat easier in it, I'm one of those people who picks fashion over reliability (still using Fur at level 21) so I like to see my character.

My decision to be in 3rd person has very little to do with admiring my character. I simply like to have more of a view of what's around me. This is intensely useful when in battle and outdoors where there's a likelihood of being attacked from any angle. Not so much in towns or indoors in peaceful places. (that said, I frequently just stay in 3rd person in dungeons because attacks are imminent. When I clear them, I'll switch to 1st person.)
The problem with battle in 1st person is you have a poor perception of depth/distance, and if you're a melee character, this becomes a problem. Also, your gear like shields and swords can obscure your vision. It's just more tactically sound to battle in 3rd person, especially because you can see more area around you and defend yourself against multiple enemies more effectively. 1st person lends itself to more immersion, but due to the disadvantages in battle and open terrain, I find a compromise to be good enough.

Third person is great when used to look around corners. Definitely a bit cheap but what the hell its in the game isnt it?

Well, not so much anymore... My second character is a level 50 with maxed warrior skills, double enchanted armor and weaponry, and a general sense of f*ck you. I plow through opposition. I had to raise the difficulty because it was too easy. One thing I wish, though, was if you raised the difficulty, you were granted a higher cap for skills (that went away if you lowered the difficulty after gaining more skill beyond the original cap of 100). I just like the process of leveling up. Now that all my warrior skills are maxed, and Enchanting, pretty much everything I do doesn't gain me anything at all, so now I'm just going with magic here and there, raising my destruction. I don't like to play as a mage, so it's sort of a compromise that I'm forced to.

Strangely enough since bringing up the point about playing perspectives, without thinking about it too much, I'm now more or less completely playing in first person as I feel it gives better immersion into the game and even in dungeons I'm in first person, I only go into third person in battles.
As I[m only on a low level still, I was surprised how difficult the chorus creatures were in the Shimmering Cave to kill, the only way I could beat them was to divide and conquer and with Lydias help kill them individually. The Falmer leader and his bodyguard were much harder, I had to strategically plan how to kill him and that involved leading him on a merry chase and killing him in an ambush type attack. I got very lucky though with his robotic bodyguard as he got stuck in a doorway and I was able to pick him off with a whole load of arrows. |
