Not Fiction; Not Sci-Fi
 

Is there a genre between Fiction and Sci-Fi? Something where a character can or does go beyond reality but doesn't live in a world that accepts it. Or notices it?

For an example, in O'Brien's The Things They Carried one of the women becomes one with the Jungle, in so far as she disappears into it. Its hard to tell whether O'Brien means she materialized into the Jungle, but needless to say it isn't a book filled with mutants and the setting is not only a familiar world, but its Vietnam. So the world is ours, but the experiences are almost supernatural.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Not totally sure what you're looking for since sci-fi isn't about the supernatural, but maybe someone like Gabriel García Márquez would be what you're looking for. There's also Vonnegut of course, but I assume you've read stuff by him before.

I have not read GGM - Lit. Shock. Knew a girl who loved him. Hated her.

Also have not read Kurt since 8th grade.

How isn't Sci-Fi supernatural?

Science fiction (note how it generally involves fictional science ;)):

• Interstellar travel
• Aliens
• Time machines
• Robots
• Futuristic settings

Supernatural:

• Ghosts
• Magic
• Mythical creatures
• Mystical stuff

Perhaps something like Illusions by Richard Bach is in the vein of what you're looking for?

It's what passes between two airplane pilots who are in the normal world, but one of the pilots happens to be a Messiah. The line between reality and fantasy can be somewhat blurred, while the rest of the world seemingly remains unaware of things which can happen, and do happen.

Secondly, I'm using supernatural in a very literal (ostensible) way; above natural. So people turning into the jungle is only slightly above the normal. it doesn't ask you to suspend disbelief for the whole of the scene. In otherwords, the whole story isn't possible, its generally one thing.

How's this, what if I wrote something where, without saying it, you were led to believe that it was taking place in the US, but I refered to a place where it never stopped raining.

We can conceive of rain, and a landscape like the US, but where rain cosntantly falls is slightly above the norm. Thats what I'm looking for. Things like this.

No offense, man. But series give me the creeps. I just cannot and will not bring myself to read them.

I definitely think you should check out Márquez then. His book Of Love and Other Demons, for example, contains a girl whose red hair continues growing long after her death but is otherwise a realistic story told in the real world.

Also, have you ever read Life of Pi by Yann Martel? If you haven't, check it out. I'd say it also fits the bill.

I'm with you on that. It just sounded like something viable to your first post request. Series always decline and usually are just drivel money makers after the author has discovered the money train. I havent found a decent read in awhile save for Non fiction.
