I wouldn't call Last Year at Marienbad Avant-Garde but I love it nevertheless. French new wave is fascinating.

That's one of my absolute favourite short films. Maya Deren is a fantastic director, everything (apart from A Meditation on Violence, which is somewhat mediocre and is overwhelmed by its theoretical burdens) that she touches becomes amazing.
Here's one of my favourite avant-garde films, and one of my all time favourites in films as a whole. I've seen it countless times and still love it as much as I did when I first saw it. Begotten (1990) Probably NSFW, unless your boss is cool with you watching disembowelments, post mortem handjobs, etc.
