Favourite British Movies?

Obviously being British I will be a little biased but I do love the qualities of British film.

It's almost complete lack of sentimentality, it's sly humour and it's realism. Of course this isn't ALWAYS the case but generally British film made for a British audience have these qualities in abundance.

So what are your favourite British movies and why? I will post up a few soon with some well known and not so well known films.

first thing that popped in my head was The Wicker Man (1973)....i re-watch it often and still love it....on that note i also love all the Hammer Studio flicks (actually theres been a bit of a marathon this month...for obvious reason),....i think they were a major influence on my love for horror films....and that they really represent a style that nobody else could ever capture....and they've all tried

those and Love Actually...i honestly do not know why i love this movie....but i do love it...it's probably my favorite x-mas movie

of the top of my head

Get Carter, 24 Hour Party People, Trainspotting, Sexy Beast, Shallow Grave, Following, Snatch, and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels are a few great ones that spring to mind for me. What can I say? When it comes to making movies about crime and/or drugs, Britain is the shiznit.

Definitely Get Carter, Snatch, Trainspotting, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Layer Cake, and Sexy Beast come to mind first when I'm thinking of good British films popular outside of Britain. After sitting down on it I think back to my days working in a video store and renting movies every night and I am reminded of Dog Soldiers, This Is England, and Dead Man's Shoes, some very underrated movies from the last decade. Also if you're after a pretty disturbingly violent movie The Rise of the Foot Soldier is a pretty brutal look in the events leading up to a triple homicide in the forests outside of Manchester (or something a long those lines) and the police weren't able to figure out who the killer was. I thought it was just going to be a pretty standard football hooligan movie, but as you get deeper in the violence moves beyond petty squabbles but into some hardcore gangster shit. Not the greatest movie, but definitely worth a look if you liked Green Street Hooligans, orThe Firm. Although I'm going on the record now in saying that The Firm is the best football hooligan movie ever made.

For me, Withnail & I takes the cake. I've actually only seen it once, but it was absolutely sublime. Perhaps I should get sloshed and rewatch it tonight?

Trainspotting, Withnail & I, Naked, Snatch, Alfie, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Dead Man's Shoes, 24 Hour Party People, Control.

I haven't seen Get Carter yet, but it's been on my list a while. I'm always on the look out for great British films but I never seem to come across any.
