after some thought and a viewing i think i still have to go with The Magnificent Seven.....and for me the main reason i choose it....is simply that i would re-watch it over the Wild Bunch most days

The Wild Bunch wins that one 4-3. Seriously guys, start sending me some new wars.
This time we're going with stylish-films-about-poor-kids-in-developing-countries. Danny Boyle's SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
vs. Fernando Meirelles' CITY OF GOD Last edited by Alfred; 10-04-2012 at 05:45 PM. |

Oh this one is simple, it's City of God by a mile. I really did not get the hype over Slumdog Millionaire, it's nowhere close to being Danny Boyle's best movie, I mean I'd rate his 2004 kids movie Millions higher than Slumdog Millionaire, and I definitely don't think it was a better movie than say The Wrestler when in competition for the 2008 Best Picture award.
City of God conversely really does lift me up and knock me down in the way that I think of when I hear the words "feel good movie" because I feel way better if something bad is followed up by something good. City of God - 1 Slumdog Millionaire - 0 |

I'm also going to go with City Of God here. Fantastic movie all-around, and some of the best cinematography I've ever seen. It's more realistic and raw than Slumdog Millionaire.

No contest as far as I'm concerned.

Interesting to see City Of God dominating this so far. I thought it would be a little bit more evenly matched, since critical reaction for both of these films was pretty even (Slumdog Millionaire is actually a higher-rated film on both Metacritic and Rotton Tomatoes).

I'd put 127 hours far ahead of Slumdog also. I found slumdog a bit muddled and confused honestly. City Of God was quite a treat because I came in with no expectations and was blown away. My vote is leaning far to one side for City Of God. OOPS City of God- 5 Slumdog Millionare-zip Always wanted this Lil Ze shirt also. http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/pict/2...83034040_1.jpg Last edited by FRED HALE SR.; 10-04-2012 at 06:16 PM. |

I think my resentment to Slumdog Millionaire is aimed less at the movie itself, and the fact that this is the movie that started to get people talking about Danny Boyle. I mean forget Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions, and Sunshine, THIS is the movie that really showcases this man's skill as a director
Call me a cynic, but a part of me thinks this film won out of some kind of pity party from Hollywood to disguise the fact that the Academy Awards are ultimately rich people celebrating the fact that they're rich and famous by giving each other gold statues. I mean there's nothing particularly wrong with the film as a whole, but compared to Danny Boyle's previous works it's really nothing special, it would have like if David Fincher won Best Director for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I'll admit I'm biased towards genre movies because I prefer genre fiction in general, but this has just always been something that's bugged me. Going back to City of God, one of the things that I absolutely loved about it was its cinematography which was just absolutely gorgeous. I also think having a native director really helped add a touch of realism to the film in a way that a foreign director just wouldn't have gotten right. It's like if District 9 had been directed by an American, all that insight into the racial struggles between the white Africans and the black Africans really would have been lost, or at least not as prominently featured. That's another thing that bugged me about Slumdog Millionaire, I feel it would have been better in the hands of an Indian director, especially when dealing with topics that are really at the heart of that nation, namely the legions of street urchin children. Like, could you imagine a film like Bend It Like Beckham being directed by say... Guy Ritichie? Yeah I"m sure the football parts would have been great, but all the commentary on the dysfunction of Indian families and this torn feeling of wanting to assimilate while also wanting to cherish your heritage would have been lost. Wow, I apparently dislike Slumdog Millionaire more than I like to admit. |
