Certain aspects are for sure but it is a story based within the Roman era so you can see inaccuracies but the story of William Wallace is fact based so it's easier to see what those inaccuracies are.

Gladiator can take liberties with it's fact but Braveheart shouldn't really but it does. Mel doesn't like the English much does he?

Well he apparently doesn't like Jews or women either so you're not alone.

Besides I fell in love with Catherine McCormack in the film :D

Gladiator is a solid film full of some genuinely great moments- the ending is sublime and the battle scenes are directed with gusto but there is just something about Russell Crowe I don't like. Besides the much derided Kingdom Of Heaven from Ridley Scott was far better for me.

Gladiator 3
Braveheart 4

Same but not nearly as much as Mel Gibson.

He does like a drink and souped up apocalyptic cars though. Not that that's good either.

I must say neither movie left any lasting impression on me. But I remember being more entertained while watching Braveheart, so, I guess, it gets my vote.

Braveheart 5
Gladiator 3

EDIT: If anybody else wanna vote, do it now, cause I'm posting a new battle soon.

The Silence of the Lambs

vs

Se7en

bob. 10-19-2010 02:14 PM

i like both but for me hands down Seven....i like the story and characters much more

Silence of the Lambs - 0
Seven - 1

ThePhanastasio 10-19-2010 03:31 PM

Silence of the Lambs all the way for me. Anthony Hopkins and Ted Levine were superb, and Jodie Foster also did a pretty good job with it. Se7en is a good movie, and I really enjoyed the premise, but I will still take Silence of the Lambs on this one.

Silence of the Lambs - 1
Seven - 1

TheCunningStunt 10-19-2010 04:33 PM

Silence of the Lambs 2
Seven 1

Close one, but SOTL is a classic. Classic story, classic bad guy, great ending.
I suppose Seven has them things, but SOTL more so.

Janszoon 10-19-2010 05:17 PM

Never really liked Silence of the Lambs to be honest so Seven wins by a mile for me.

Silence of the Lambs 2
Seven 2

LoathsomePete 10-19-2010 05:19 PM

Seven all the way, I don't really like Jodie Foster as an actress.

Se7en - 3
Silence of the Lambs - 2

jackhammer 10-19-2010 06:08 PM

The real war here should be Manhunter V Silence Of The Lambs :(

Yeah, that would be a good one.

dankrsta 10-20-2010 07:41 AM

^Actually I thought about that, but I'm not sure how many people here have seen it. Imo, it's better than both of these movies.

Edit: I might as well vote. Seven left bigger impression on me, that atmosphere and a feeling of desolation. This is also something that Manhunter has in abundance although achieved differently. My favorite Mann film.

Se7en - 4
Silence of the Lambs - 2

storymilo 10-20-2010 03:11 PM

Se7en for me. I liked Silence of the Lambs but Se7en has a really eerie, disturbing atmosphere and enraptured me a lot more. And the ending is fantastic. And Kevin Spacey. It was also one of the first "scary movies" that I watched so it left a bigger impression on me.

Se7en- 5
Silence of the Lambs- 2

someonecompletelyrandom 10-20-2010 03:13 PM

You're all mad!

Se7en- 5
Silence of the Lambs- 3

Engine 10-20-2010 05:50 PM

whoa whoa whoa

7 is a good film but definitely..

Se7en: 5
Silence of the Lambs: 4

debaserr 10-20-2010 05:53 PM

se7en 5
silence of the lambs 5

both are great.

dankrsta 10-23-2010 06:25 AM

And it's a tie. Let's see if this next battle gonna be so close.

Romper Stomper

American History X

bob. 10-24-2010 12:03 PM

both are great movies....and although i feel that American History X had a much more "jarring" ending....i think Romper Stomper is just a better more gritty look at the neo-nazi "movement"

Romper Stomper - 1
American History X - 0

Fixed!

I'm a little surprised more people didn't vote. I was sure many have seen both films. My vote goes unquestionably to Romper Stomper. It's a pretty solid film with a believable insight into one skinhead group. On the other hand, American History X always seemed to me like a typical preachy, melodramatic Oscar bait, especially with all those slow motion shots and alternating b&w and color scenes. So transparent and with subtlety of a sledgehammer. We're constantly beaten over the head with a massage, not to mention a weak handling of the main character's transition. While I usually like Edward Norton, I can't join the universal praise he got for this performance. He just wasn't believable enough as a violent skinhead. For such authenticity one doesn't need to look much further than Russell Crowe in Romper Stomper.

Romper Stomper - 2
American History X - 1

I'll post a new battle soon, so if anybody wants to vote on this one, hurry up.
Btw, I'm still waiting for someone to send me any suggestion.

I agree with almost everything you said here (though I did like Edward Norton's performance). At any rate, I vote Romper Stomper too.

Next battle: Two films with a tempting devil in them played by two great actors

Angel Heart

Devil's Advocate

Maybe these two films are not even in quality, but look at these posters and their parallels. I just had to put them together :D

bob. 11-03-2010 09:18 AM

this is an absolute no brainer....Angel Heart has neo-noir, great cast, great script, bleak yet interesting filming, and a 'hell' of an ending....

Devil's Advocate has Reeves horrible attempt at a deep south accent, voodoo witch doctors, painfully obvious references to Paradise Lost (main character is named John Milton)...

Angel Heart 1
Devil's Advocate 0

dankrsta 11-03-2010 12:51 PM

Yeah, this is quite easy. Angel Heart is a great film and Devil's Advocate just entertaining (all with Pacino's overacting and Reeves accent :))

Angel Heart 2
Devil's Advocate 0

bob. 11-03-2010 01:14 PM

don't forget about the chicken killing voodoo witch doctor :)

jackhammer 11-03-2010 02:19 PM

Angel Heart 3
Devil's Advocate 0

someonecompletelyrandom 11-03-2010 02:21 PM

Angel Heart 4
Devil's Advocate 0

Can I do the next one?

dankrsta 11-03-2010 02:52 PM

^^Conan, if you have a suggestion for the next war, just pm me and I'll post it here (with the credit to you of course)

dankrsta 11-04-2010 03:57 PM

Lo and behold! The first suggestion, and a very good one. Thank you bob.

Two musical films, two rock operas or dramas, or whatever you wanna call them. Let's see what music fans think of these two films. Hopefully more people will vote.

The Wall

Tommy

jackhammer 11-04-2010 05:41 PM

Despite being a big film fan and obviously liking music, I have never seen Tommy! I am not a big Who fan so I have always put off watching it.

However I am a big fan of the film of The Wall far more than the album and think it has some superb set pieces, animation and great cinematography but obviously I can't vote in this one.

dankrsta 11-05-2010 11:09 AM

I have no idea how to vote. I've seen The Wall many times and Tommy twice (but a long time ago). The first time I watched it, I was an impressionable kid so it kind of clouds my judgment and memory of it. And while I can describe why I like The Wall, I can't do the same for Tommy. There's just this awesome vague memory of it, the way I saw it that first time (strangely enough my second viewing a bit later didn't destroy it). I almost don't want to watch it again just to preserve it.

But how should I vote?

OK, I'll take an irrational route and still vote for Tommy!

The Wall 0
Tommy 1

bob. 11-05-2010 12:19 PM

for two movies that are very similar....ie both revolve around mental illness, both main characters have chosen isolation rather than dealing with trauma, both films have a very strong message about the dangers of materialism etc etc...these movies are really different

Tommy shows these subjects in an almost silly and hyper psychedelic way.....creative color schemes, silly characters (Elton John in his 72 holed air-cushioned boots), the slime ball doctor played perfectly by Jack Nicholson, and the hilarious yet creepy Keith Moon as the uncle...and who could ever forget the baked beans

whereas The Wall follows a much darker and desperate approach...i especially like the directors concentration of Carl's Jung's theory of "good and evil" sides of personality clashing to take over ones weakened mentality....such as towards the end when the young Pink meets the older Pink in what seems to be a mental hospital and for the first time realizing the he and he alone is the cause of the wall...and thus putting himself on trial...and of course the bleak dark animation

The Wall 1
Tommy 1

dankrsta 11-08-2010 12:27 PM

Hmm...this didn't turn out as I expected. Come on people, I can't believe nobody saw The Wall and Tommy. Oh well...

But, look at that, I have another suggestion, from Conan. He wanted to compare Heath Ledger's last two films and performances.

The Dark Knight

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

This time I can't vote as I still haven't seen Doctor Parnassus.

James 11-08-2010 12:35 PM

The Dark Night, Parnassus was ****.
TDK 1
TIODP 0

dankrsta 11-19-2010 04:46 PM

This thread is not dead...yet!

It's time to post a suggestion from bob.
Two twisted Asian movies about revenge, in one way or another

Ichi the Killer

Oldboy

jackhammer 11-19-2010 06:37 PM

^^^^^

Ooooh, now this is a close one. I do find Old Boy a little overrated personally and I prefer Lady Vengeance in the vengeance trilogy and the problem with Ich is that it is cut in virtually every country in one form or another. I have the 2 disc Dutch version which cost me a little more than I usually pay for DVD's but it's completely uncut status and packaging won me over.

I genuinely can't decide. Old Boy is definitely more intense but I love the black comedy in Ichi (apart from the nipple slicing scene which was a difficult watch).

jackhammer 12-12-2010 06:47 PM

This thread died :(

How about:

Both John Hughes films.

DoctorSoft 12-12-2010 10:51 PM

Breakfast Club- 1
Weird Science- 0

Just saw Breakfast Club for the first time in the summer and it was such a stereotypically 80s teen movie that it was awesome, haha. Weird Science I saw 1 or 2 years ago and I don't remember liking it as much as the Breakfast Club.
