Your Favorite Videogames of All Time
All Apologies if this thread has already been done. I don't think it has, as I searched the Media subforum for "favorite video games", but sometimes I suck at searching.
Anyway... I was thinking about making a thread for your Top 5 VGs of all time, and then I realized that's waaaay too difficult for me, and probably a lot of other people as well. So here it is, a place to list as many games as you'd like and explain why. So here's my list, in a loose chronological order. Prepare yourselves for a heavy dose of images and nostalgia. Super Mario Bros. (NES) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...o_Bros_box.jpg I don't really need to explain this one; it's a legend Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...250px-Smb3.jpg If I HAD to pick a "favorite videogame of all time", this would be it. I distinctly remember playing this with my brother as a small child. There's so much nostalgia tied to this game. ...and I still don't understand how we discovered the location of the secret flutes in both worlds 1 and 2. Duck Hunt (NES) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...uckHuntBox.jpg The first FPS I ever played. Killing ducks with a peripheral ray gun. Hell yes. Trog! (NES) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...gvideogame.jpg I seriously doubt anyone else recognizes this game, but it's one of the 15 or so games I ever owned for my NES. It's a legend in my mind, specifically for being the first co-op game I ever played. |
Super Mario 64 (N64)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._box_cover.jpg This is another game that has too much nostalgia/memories tied to it. I remember calling my cousin up (quite a feat since he lived in a different state and this was the age of land-lines and dial-up, and I was rather young) specifically to ask him how to beat the first boss, the big Bob-Omb. Star Fox 64 (N64) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...4_Game_Box.jpg Would you believe me if I said I remember the exact moment I received this game as a gift from my parents? It was in 1998 and I was only 8 years old, but I remember so vividly how my brother and I eagerly unwrapped it after a successful night at Chuck E. Cheeses. I don't think we ever managed to beat the gamy by flying up the "left side" of the solar system. That final zombified Star Wolf battle was too tough. Pokemon Red/Blue Version (Game Boy) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...on_red_box.jpg I'll admit, I still buy the occasional updated Pokemon game and play through it, the latest being Pearl. I'll probably pick up Black/White when it comes out. |
Metal Slug and Bust-a-Move (Arcade)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...28cover%29.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...le_box_art.jpg The ultimate arcade games. Almost always found paired together, I've spent many a quarter climbing to higher and higher levels in these two games. Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 and 2 (PC) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...px-Rct-box.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...on_2_cover.jpg I've spent an unbelievable amount of time on this series. It's so important to me that I've transferred all my saved games and custom tracks from laptop to laptop as time has elapsed. |
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 (PC)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...-win-cover.jpg The C&C games are a joke nowadays, but this was the first RTS I played and I got really into it. I think I was able to take on 7 Brutal opponents at my peak. Counter-Strike 1.5/1.6/Source (PC) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Strike_Box.jpg Thinking about 1.5 makes me sad because I used to have a 5-digit steam account for which I completely forgot the login info. Sigh. Anyway, this is probably the only game from the 90's that I still regularly play. It would be #2 or 3, tied with RCT, as my favorite game ever. I'm excited to see that Valve is finally showing Source some love with a new beta, even if they've barely changed anything. Super Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Melee (N64/GC) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ersmashbox.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Players_Ch.jpg This would be game #4 on my list. It got me into a lot of fights with my good friends, but we always reconciled after a day and resumed beating each other to a pulp. Marth 4 lyfe |
Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...o_sunshine.jpg You know, I guess Mario kinda dominated my life. Diablo II (PC) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...I_Coverart.png The first time I ever considered myself addicted to a videogame was when I couldn't stop playing D2. I even went as far as purchasing a Stone of Annihilation from an online vendor for my Necro. Jeez, I had no life in Freshman year of High School thanks to this game. Resident Evil 4 (GC) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...4-gc-cover.jpg I've spent at least 100 hours playing this game, which is shocking since that involves nothing but playing the single-person campaign over and over. (With a healthy dose of the Mercenaries on the side) Brilliant game, it's such a shame RE5 sucked. Gauntlet Legends and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (N64/GC) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...s_Coverart.png Co-op play at its finest. For me, this stands out as the best cooperative videogame ever. Don't steal my ****ing treasure chests or I wont save you from the grim reaper next time. |
Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3 (XB/XB360)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...b7/Halobox.jpg The king of console multiplayer, and I absolutely cannot f*cking wait for Reach. Left 4 Dead 1/2 (PC) http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...dows_cover.jpg This game comes really close to toppling Gauntlet as my favorite co-op game. I remember that a lot of people complained (and even organized an official boycott) because they felt Valve didn't include enough content in the original game. However, I feel that I got my money's worth and then some. The expert campaigns are amazingly intense and versus is awesomely fun if you're playing with the right people. |

Anyway hm. I don't play that many videogames, especially anymore, but (without any particular order)... Final Fantasy Tactics Final Fantasy VII Xenogears Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles 007 Goldeneye Mario Kart (N64 or Wii are the ones I'm most familiar with) LoZ: Link's Awakening LoZ: Ocarina of Time Grandia Metal Gear Solid Duck Hunt |

I fell in love with this game the first time I played it. Then I kept on falling in love with it for about 7 more times. Terrific game with really lovable characters and an enthralling storyline. http://thanmoreseries.files.wordpres...09/10/bof3.jpg Awesome RPG for the Playstation 1. Really enjoyed playing this one. http://pochinim.com.ua/game/pictures/fifa10.jpg I'll just go with the latest one, but I've been playing the series since '98. http://cetraland.files.wordpress.com...-time-logo.jpg Well... it's Ocarina of Time. |
^
Fifa for me, been playing the series since 99/00. San Andreas and that are the only games I've ever really loved. Not a big gamer really. |
Fifa is definitely one of the best "go by a friend, sit back and relax with a beer and kick some ass" games.
|
I like playing it alone just as much as beating friends :D
I can just do seasons over and over. They just need to sort things out for the next one, they said 10 would be a more realistic transfer market and weather conditions. Champions league games in the blazing sun is a joke. The ability to change captain in a game would be good. Substituting Giggs for Nani and having Nani as captain is bizarre. They need to get their act together and make it a near perfect game. |
I think they purposely leave out stuff out, and just keep including stuff bit by bit with each succeeding year, lol. Always leaves us wanting more. Probably a woman is in charge of making these games.
|
Quote:
If they say they're gonna give us things like improved weather then they should follow it up. Playing games in a pitch covered in snow, yeah much more realistic Fifa. What team do you support? And nah, if it was up to a woman there would be a kit-man man mode. Where we can iron the kits all day. |
Chelsea supporter dude. Fifa 10 wasn't bad though, the mechanics of the game are pretty ok. I'm sure by 11 they'll work out a lot of the kinks. Didn't get a chance to play World Cup 2010 yet though.
|

Fifa 10 game play was so smooth. Really good game, but they promised improved this and improved that but didn't deliver, so it pissed me off. Football in the snow with a white ball is just beyond a joke. I've not bothered with the world cup game, my cousin bought it and took it back. He said it was a joke. |
All the World Cup games to me are jokes! Just a spin off game to make some quick money. Although I did buy 2006 and enjoyed it.
I'm a huge English supporter, but don't get me wrong, I'm not English, lol. I'm actually from the Caribbean - Trinidad, to be more exact. Which would be far to out of your range of guesses I'm sure. |
Quote:
Why do you support Chelsea?! Unless you only got into football in 2006 or 2010 I have no idea why. No disrespect but people who aren't from England usually support the team that won the league that year when they first get into football. I wouldn't have guessed Trinidad nope :( |
Quote:
Not everyone supports ManUre, lol. |

Haha yeah, you should have seen how much people jumped ship when CR7 abondoned his post.

I miss CR7. |

@stunt and seuss: never got into sports games either. (well, if you discount mario sports) I always hear excellent things about the GTA series, but from what little I've played, it was very boring.
@james: your timesplitters image don't work, brah. But I disliked that game solely because my friend would always pick the cheapass monkey character that was impossible to hit |
Quote:
Surely you've done cheats, got a load of guns and ran over a few hoes and stuff? Police chases and stuff? It made my early teen years so so so good. |
I've never actually done that, but I've watched my friends do it. It seems fun for all of 15 minutes, but I don't think I'd ever remember it as one of my favorite games ever. I also tried to play GTAIV seriously (which is like the highest rated game of all time on Metacritic), but I started dozing off...

Haaaah, Tetris. I figured games like Tetris and Pac-Man were too legendary to mention. Are you one of those people that have the "drop" button permanently stuck down?

Ok, ok. So old school MK, Killer Instinct and Zombies Ate My Neighbors are on my list of go-to games. =D |
Idk if they're my favorite, but it was a great series. I credit it for really getting me into video games.

top3 for me
System Shock PC - The original survival horror FPS. one of the first true 3d games ever as well at a time when people were still hyped on 2.5d. full player mobility, including leaning around corners. in 1994. a feature Half Life never managed to implement... everything that makes games like Dead Space and Bioshock awesome are 100% directly related to this classic. the story and pacing of the game are impeccable, the characters are fleshed out just enough to let your imagination fill in the pertinent blanks and the integration of the protagonist into what feels like a living element of the environment you're forced to explore is something i've honestly hoped for and have never seen since (even in the sequel). it's harsh to play the game now with 2d sprites in a blocky 3d world, especially if you grew up on modern game 'experiences', but no other game has ever made me jump out of my seat in the middle of a sunny afternoon. Anachronox PC - one of the absolute best rpgs ever. criminally overlooked due to John Romero's hubris and Ion Storm's boner for Daikatana. by the time this title came out people were so full of the garbage hype coming from Ion Storm that most copies just collected dust on the shelf. unfortunate. everything about this game was awesome, the characters had typical cliches but were presented in a unique way within the game (you play Sly Boots, a private detective down on his luck). it's not D&D dressed up in fancy clothes *cough*Knights of the Old Republic*cough*. the plot touches heavily on metaphysics / string theory / multiple universes but the medium affords the ability to present it in such a simple way that anyone can understand it. the story also features one of the greatest twists i've ever experienced in any game ever. unfortunately due to being an Ion Storm title it had to be shipped ahead of schedule so the original story was sliced, which results in a huge cliffhanger right at the end. HUGE. at this point 9 years later i'd be quite happy with just a .pdf of the rest of the story but even that is still unavailable. :( Ogre Battle - a SNES classic and one of the few games that really made me lose my **** back in the day. i must have played through the whole thing at least 7-8 times to try to get all the endings (apparently there are a dozen). it's sad that with the amount of strategic games out there this is still one of the best examples i can think of that made me feel like an actual general. this was also one of the first games with a reputation meter that would have a drastic effect on every aspect of the game. it was very possible (and in fact easier) to become a tyrant to the world you were originally trying to save. |
the Age Of Empires trilogy
Age Of Empires was my very first game, and I was hooked right away. After that I got the sequel and later on the threequel. Number 2 is probably the best on the series, but all of them are great in their own way. Still my go-to RTS. Civilization III I got into this a couple years after Age Of Empires and I don't think I've ever played a game so addictive. Flower This downloadable game for PS3 had and continues to have a powerful emotional effect on me. So simple yet so deep, I recommend this to anyone with an open mind. Super Mario Bros I've never beaten it (sad, eh?) but it's a joy to play time and time again. So much depth to this game and the endless amount of secrets is impressive for 1985. Super Mario Galaxy Pure platforming joy. Amazing level design, extremely attractive visuals, and a wonderful soundtrack all make for a near-perfect game. StarFox 64 Like SMB, I've not beaten it, but starting over in Corneria City and trying to get even farther never gets old. Call Of Duty This is an intense war experience that added a new dimension to FPS games. Even the newer games haven't been able to capture the same mood that this one has. edit: not to mention it still has some of the best multiplayer maps in FPS gaming |
It's really too bad Modern Warfare 2 is so terrible, eh Alfred? They really half-assed it. COD4 and 2 were so good...

I loved going to Vegas, it made up for the fact that I've never been there in real life :( http://www.wii60.com/wp-content/uplo...lslug3ng-2.jpg Grew up with it - its so frikken awesome. And Spyro, he was so cute. Also, basically every single Pokemon game out. I was so pro. |
