You know who else thought they sucked? J.D. Salinger.

I first read Catcher in year 11 as it was one of our assigned books, so I was about 16. I remember all of my classmates absolutely hated it. I, being a bit of a phony, pretended to hate it along with them but secretly I re-read it a good number of times that year and really loved it. I think mainly because I was going through that stereotypical teenage pit of being cynical, naive, and not wanting to let go of childhood just like Holden Caulfield.
I haven't re-read the book since I was a teenager but it would be interesting to see what my reaction would be towards it now as an adult. Nine Stories is still worth a read though even if you don't like Catcher - I know plenty of people who despise the novel but really like his short stories. And yeah, not wanting to read the novel because of the whole Lennon/Chapman thing is a bit silly. |

A movie adaption of "Catcher" should NOT be made. One of the themes of the movie is how much Holden hates movies. He refers to his own brother as a "prostitute" because he works at the movies. Making the book a movie would be somewhat illogical. That Salinger resisted movie deals doesn't help this point either.
On the other hand, I would love to read anything in the wazoo from Salinger that he didn't release during his life. Think about how controversial it must be, if what he DID release was "Catcher"! If he specified anything in his will, however, that goes before anything.

Did the Amish, in their book, specifically say they hate movies?
And did the Amish ever attempt to interfere with people making movies about them?
