No it does make sense. It was a kids book, and it was one of my favorites, but they movie dealt with some really mature subject matter.
Newsweek put it the best though, and I stopped thinking of it as a depressing childrens movie, and more of an actual, intelligent film. Quote:

I just watched Moon via davidmovie.com because of this thread. It's so amazing! I'm a little confused, but I'm sure if I watched again I woudn't be.
I wish I could change my vote now... I voted for Star Trek.

I choose Up, it's just easily one of the best animated films of our time and just an all round beautiful movie

A Serious Man! Started so bizarrely and ended bizarrely as well. Definitely unusual, but I expect that from the Coen Brothers. I really enjoyed it. The humor was right up my alley
