The BBC are currently showing 'Our War' a documentary from the soldiers perspective.
Contains footage of British soldiers in close quarter combat in Afghanistan, only recently declassified by the Ministry of Defence. 1st Battalion Royal Anglian, most of which are on their first tour. This is a must see! Shaky start, but the young lads learn quickly. Episode 1: Ambushed |

The Man with a Camera (1929)
An experimental silent documentary by Dziga Vertov, with probably one of the greatest musical scores. It documents urban life in Odessa and starts out with this statement: Quote:
A documentary portrait of a one-room school in rural France, where the students (ranging in age from 4 to 11) are educated by a single dedicated teacher. -IMDB It's quite fascinating and engaging, forcing you to become attached to every student in the classroom. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008) It's really not very well made, but the story is worth the watch, and it can get very sentimental. Plot: A filmmaker decides to memorialize a murdered friend when his friend's ex-girlfriend announces she is expecting his son. -IMDB Babies (2010) It follows the beginning of 4 babies, from the day they are born to the day they walk their first steps. From Mongolia to Namibia to San Francisco to Tokyo, it's a documentary based on observation, where the baby is in the centre of the action at all times, in different societies and different ways of life.

Ken Burns' Jazz is amazingly informative and extremely well done. It'll take you a while to watch, but it's conveniently broken into "episodes" so you don't have to awkwardly stop at some indiscriminate point within the information.

For anyone with the slightest bit of interest in Aleister Crowley (or prominent "occult" figures in general), this is an essential starting point; very informative if you're not all that familiar with the facts and fictions of his life.
The only complaints I have with it is 1) some irrelevant 'conspiracy theories' during the later part of the film regarding Crowley's bloodline. 2) There is some information that could have been given more attention, and some that had no need for inclusion, as well as slight inaccuracies (such as the narrator referring to the swastika as "the mark of the beast). 3) I don't care too much for the portrayal of Crowley, but, that's just personal preference. All in all, its a an enjoyable film. Until there is a better one is produced, I'm content with this one. Highly recommended.

One of my favorites in recent years would have to be Sketches of Frank Gehry. Directed by Sidney Pollack and dedicated to the architectural advances of one of the Worlds truly best and most innovative minds.
