Cool. I'm not sure if I understand the second part of your answer though. What do you mean by "buy the mic separately unless you want to have the full band experience"? Don't you buy all the instruments separately anyway?

Ahh, I thought as much. Alas.

Yeah I think Rock Band would be my choice.

nope. usually comes in one big bundle with either the game, guitar, drums, and mic. or just a game and guitar pack. or just the game disc.

You can sing in Rock Band .. I think the only issue you should be aware of then is that you have to look at a screen like this :

Not saying it's necessarily a problem, but you have to watch the characters in the game band play on stage with the rolling notes etc.

In the Karaoke games like Lips, Singstar and probably others, you get to watch something else like the music video for the song you're supposed to sing.

That might be better if singing is the only way the game is going to be played. Rock Band has of course the added benefit that you can join in though.

that's when you're playing multiplayer though. when you play solo it scales up to take the whole screen.

Ah, I see. I guess I wouldn't mind having the guitar in addition to the mic, but there's no way we have room for the drums in our apartment.

Okay, so it sounds like maybe Rock Band is the way to go for me here, but which version would you recommend for someone mostly interested in 80s pop music? And what's the story with the downloadable songs? Can you download individual tracks or do they come in groups?

Band Hero is the new poppier version of Guitar Hero made by the same people so odds of it's quality being better are good. The kit comes with everything from Guitar Hero: World Tour so I would image that you can choose which instrument you want. You could probably pick up a mic and game off ebay or half.com for a lot cheaper than you could in store. Here's the playlist of the game to see if it strikes your wife's fancy:

3 Doors Down - When I’m Gone
The Airborne Toxic Event - Gasoline
The All-American Rejects - Dirty Little Secret
Alphabeat - Fascination
Aly & AJ - Like Whoa
Angels & Airwaves - The Adventure
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals - Steal My Kisses
Big Country - In A Big Country
The Bravery - Believe
Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting
Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me (Live)
Cold War Kids - Hang Me Up To Dry
Corinne Bailey Rae - Put Your Records On
Counting Crows - Angels Of The Silences
Culture Club - Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?
Dashboard Confessional - Hands Down
David Bowie - Let’s Dance
Devo - Whip It
Don McLean - American Pie
Duffy - Warwick Avenue
Duran Duran - Rio
Evanescence - Bring Me To Life
Everclear - Santa Monica
Fall Out Boy - Sugar, We’re Going Down
Filter - Take A Picture
Finger Eleven - Paralyzer
The Go-Go’s - Our Lips Are Sealed
Hilary Duff - So Yesterday
Hinder - Lips of An Angel
Jackson 5 - ABC
Janet Jackson - Black Cat
Jesse McCartney - Beautiful Soul
Joan Jett - Bad Reputation
Joss Stone - You Had Me
Katrina And The Waves - Walking On Sunshine
The Kooks - Naive
KT Tunstall - Black Horse & The Cherry Tree
The Last Goodnight - Pictures Of You
Lily Allen - Take What You Take
Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
Marvin ***e - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Impression That I Get
N.E.R.D. - Rockstar
Nelly Furtado - Turn Off The Light
No Doubt - Don’t Speak
No Doubt - Just A Girl
OK Go - A Million Ways
Papa Roach - Lifeline
Parachute - Back Again
Pat Benetar - Love is A Battlefield
Poison - Every Rose Has It Thorns
Robbie Williams & Kylie Minogue - Kids
The Rolling Stones - Honky Tonk Woman
Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman
Santigold - L.E.S. Aristes
Snow Patrol - Take Back The City
Spice Girls - Wannabe
Styx - Mr. Roboto
Taylor Swift - Picture To Burn
Taylor Swift - Love Story
Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me
Tonic - If You Could Only See
The Turtles - Happy Together
Village People - YMCA
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue

Hmm... sounds like a possibility. So correct me if I'm wrong but Guitar Hero and Rock Band are made by the same people right? What's the main difference between the "hero" games and the "band" games?

Harmonix developed Guitar Hero 1 and 2 but then went off to go make Rock Band with MTV games as the Publisher. From Guitar Hero III and onward Neversoft developed the game and Activision joined RedOctane to publish it. Essentially Rock Band was the first game of the new rivalry to introduce the vocal and drum aspect to the game. Guitar Hero: World Tour (4th official entry) followed suit so both of the series now have the full band effect. Band Hero, like I said, is essentially the more "poppy" version of the game, so I think it'll be the best one for your needs.

Sounds like it might be okay, the only issue is it's kind all over the map though. I think she really wants something that's mostly 80s.
