A DOP is nearly as important as the director and they have the technical savvy to interpret a directors vision. Some directors have superb ideas about how they want the film to look but don't have the necessary skill or vocabulary to emphasise this so the cinematographer fills in the blanks. Some films are shot so well but will still suffer in other departments EG editing and that's what a good director is. A master of everything and nothing in effect. It's no secret that the most successful directors use the same DOP as often as possible as they are the fulcrum for the director. A director may design some shots but if the DOP can't translate them then it shows. When I watch movies and see a certain DOP's name EG Chris Menges, I know that at the very least it has had some thought put into the film. Lighting of a scene is crucially important but the DOP far over reaches this and plans his shots accordingly to both the lighting AND directors initial instructions.

posting my top 10 movies here cause i forgot that this thread existed and i already made a top 10 movies thread
1. Pulp Fiction-All of the characters, dialogue, scenes, are highly memorable and make for an amazing movie. Quentin Tarintino is a f*cking genius (yeah, you heard me), and the general feel of this movie and the way it's presented shows various types of people who are tied together through seemingly random moments and vignettes, and culminate in a twisted journey. 2. No Country For Old Men-A thriller that's straight brutality, not just with the violent acts, but with the way it treats them. there's no suspenseful music to lead you and tell you how to feel in a scene, really all you hear is the sounds of footsteps, opening doors and passing cars, which surprisingly makes the whole thing one big, tense moment as you don't know when something crazy's going to happen. 3. Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas-my favorite movie visually. it's one seemingly neverending rollercoaster ride and while there are it's ugly moments it fits the type of lifestyle and consequences in a den of sin like Las Vegas. 4. How High-both my favorite stoner comedy and favorite comedy overall. Love the lines in this as well as the situations and randomness you get out of two guys who get in to Harvard by smoking their dead friend's ashes and getting his ghost to help them with their tests. yeah, not Oscar material, but goddamn it i thought it was hilarious. 5. Pineapple Express-2nd favorite stoner movie. what i really love the most about this movie is the chemistry between Seth Rogan and James Franco. They worked great off of each other and were a damn good and endearing duo you really grew to like. the action scenes were pretty entertaining, but tbh if you just had the movie without all the running from druglords and crooked cops and just the two leads walking around the city high i'd still watch it. 6. District 9-down to earth SciFi storyline with plenty of political and social commentary thrown in to shake things up a bit. for how much the movie was to make it looked fantastic, the aliens looked very real and and you really felt for them and their struggle to survive. 7. The Naked Gun-THIS is how you do a f*cking parody movie, you talentless sh*ts who made Epic Movie, Disaster Movie, etc. Leslie Neilsen is the f*cking man and always will be. 8. The Iron Giant-my favorite animated movie. the characters and story was one of wonder and hope and the animation was f*cking fantastic. F*ck Disney, watch this. 9. Dogma-Kevin Smith's take on religion and i love it. 10. O Brother, Where Art Thou?- loved how a movie about 3 guys escaping from a Missisippi prison during the Great Depression was used as an allegory for Homer's Oddessy. not to mention the music in this is fantastic.
