i like bela tarr a lot--especially his earlier films (the prefab people, autumn almanac) which adopt an almost cinema verite approach to very gritty, realistic human dramas. these early films remind me of john cassavetes in that tarr uses his camera and amateur actors effectively to document brutal human truths and relationships. cassavetes is right there with tark as one of my favorite directors and he was the absolute master of this style--it is interesting to see his influence on tarr's early work and tarr's perspective on themes cassavetes explored so thoroughly. beginning with damnation tarr began to incorporate more of the formal filmmaking elements, spirituality/mysticism and meditative pace that make him more akin to tarkovsky. i enjoy these films as well, particularly satantango--this period after damnation is obviously where his style blossomed and he became a distinct voice in world cinema, but his earlier films just appeal to me more (at the moment) because of the cassavetes influence and their raw, unpolished nature is refreshing--especially coming off of watching a stretch of his more recent films.

Well, I'm quite picky - your obviously not ;)

I bolded the ones I like. And I'll add Shaun of the Dead to my list as Hot Fuzz reminded me of it :D

It's not that I'm not picky, I just can't leave some of them films out. I could probably manage a top 10 but I'd feel bad because I have a few more than a top 10 favourite films. Maybe a top 20 is more doable. The ones you bolded, fine choices. What about the rest though? :(

Fair enough, I'm pretty fussy about movies though so I choose really carefully. Some I havent seen, some I didnt like - like Eternal Sunshine On The Spotless Mind, Big Fish, King Kong, Lost In Translation and Sin City - and some, like Clockwork Orange and Taxi Driver I tried to watch but didnt like so blanked out.

I watched that for a film study once. I hated it at first, but then realised it was actually a really good movie. Not a favourite, but definitely an honorary mention.

I like a variety of genres. As long as I'm entertained, that's all that matters. If I had to pick a favorite genre it would probably be Fantasy/Adventure. Give me pirates, hobbits, trolls and nelwyns any day!
