Bill Maher's "Religulous"
Has anybody seen this film?
Bill Maher may not be my favorite comedian or speaker, but anybody who has seen his film, Religulous knows that he has a point. Prophecy is only harmless as long as mankind does not hold the ability to fulfill it ourselves. People who don't have all the answers raise questions to the sky, and instead of answers from there, they receive answers from other people. People who can be corrupted, people who have motives, desires, gains. Instead of following their own instinct and intuition, they follow these men, who in short, are trying to convince us of what "God" is saying or what "God" wants. All of these people seem to think that even if we destroy the Earth, our home, this one thing that we have all around us and have always had, that its okay. After death, you go to be with God. And God will understand, because you followed that one correct rule book. Before I go any further, I would like to hear what other people have to say. |
I found him annoying. He hardly let anyone he talks to speak for more then 10 seconds before he cuts them off, and proceeds to make recycled jokes in hopes of make them look bad.

I thought it was okay. I like him better when he's being funny than when he's preaching. The movie has a bit of both in it.

I liked the movie a lot. Obviously I'm not going to swallow everything he says, but it was good entertainment.

I agree, wolverine. I enjoyed it a lot, and it definitely put me in a better mood, but absorb it has completely it legitimate information. Also, he has this condescending tone in his voice that I despise. Not to mention, he surely looks like a pedo.

I was thinking of seeing this, but my fear of watching 60+ minutes of "religion sucks" turned me down, but its nice to know from your description of the movie that it might not be like that and might actually put up some good arguements against it without blindly hating it. I criticize religion quite a bit, but I am not outright against it or proclaiming that everything with it is wrong. I can admit that there is a good and a bad side.
Anybody else care to give any more information that might help make me want to watch this film? Please don't tell me it attempts to be funny in that "haha you believe in make-believe fairytales which is stupid" way. |

It's funny that the common consensus is that he paraded these people just to make them look stupid without giving them a fair amount of time to speak. I think he interjects quite a bit, but doesn't cut them off completely. If anybody remembers the scene with the rabbi, that is what I consider cutting somebody off. Yes, the film had a bias approach, because that's what the movie was all about: the follies of blind devotion.
As far as Bill Maher himself goes, yes, he can be a little annoying and sometimes he does have a very crass and sarcastic tone. But I don't think that necessarily stifles the argument that he makes. |
