So THERE
My personal favorite naval movie ever. The scene in the life boat is too powerful for words.

The German film Das Experiment from the director of Downfall is based on a late 1970's experiment that put volunteers into a prison based system with some being the guards and some the prisoners in an atempt to observe subservient human behaviour. Unfortunately it goes tit's up. A brilliant and harrowing film about the violence in all of us. Well worth your time.

Too few people have seen this beautiful, beautiful movie.

This movie made me crack up so many times. Unfortunately, it's another one a lot of people haven't seen - at least Stateside. Funny, funny movie.

The Fisher King (1991)

I find this Terry Gilliam gem is often overlooked in favour of films like Brazil (still excellent) or 12 Monkeys .. which is unfair because it's 10 times better than 12 monkeys!

It's a drama movie. Jeff Bridges stars as successful radio host Jack Lucas who is known for his cynical style. He's climbing towards the peak of his career when he "accidentally" makes one of his regular callers go berserk in a cafè, killing people with a shotgun ..

The movie really starts 4 years later. Jack is so torn with guilt for what happened and he's become a recluse who prefers to stay drunk and smooch off his girlfriend while he wallows in self-pity. When he's out on a binge, he decides to take his own life when a gang finds him, pours gasoline all over him and are about to kill him when Perry (Robin Williams) and his gang of bums show up and save the day. Jack stays over at Perry's place and the next morning learns that Perry is not just a bum, but also quite mad as he talks to little people and believes he's a knight on a mission to find the holy grail .. Jack later learns that Perry only became crazy 4 years ago when his wife was shot in the head by a shotgun wielding crazy at a cafè ....

Jack sees a chance to save not only Perry, but himself and the story that unfolds has a bit of everything. Romance, comedy, a bit of adventure - even moments of horror. It's also perhaps the one movie that has touched me the most and it's one of very few movies ever to make me have to swallow hard a few times to get rid of that lump.

This movie is for those who can identify with the characters .. in other words, I think it's primarily a movie for those of ages 20 and up. For those, I warmly recommend it!

See it with your boyfriend/girlfriend

Your image link is broken but I know you're talking about The Fisher King. Great movie! It got a lot more mainstream praise than his previous movies when it first came out but over the years it does seem like it's become a bit forgotten about. So while I think when it was new it certainly wasn't underrated at all, I think now it has become somewhat underrated.

Arf, I've changed the picture and added the title .. thanks for the heads up!

I guess it was popular at some point, but the only one to ever bring it up in conversations the last 10 years of my life that I know are myself and my girlfriend. Glad you like it too!

Yeah, it's a great movie. Probably the closest thing to a straight drama Terry Gilliam has ever done and I think that style suited him well. I'm a fan of most of his movies (except his last two, yuck) but it think it would be cool to see him do another one in a similar style to The Fisher King.

ETA: Sorry to say it looks like your image link still isn't working.

Agreed, I also like all his movies except the last two, hehe Brazil and The Fisher King are my favourites.

That picture thing sucks cause it works here! It must have something to do with us being in different parts of the world. Oh well.

The Fisher King is indeed a great film despite that twat Robin williams being in it. Gotta give love for Time Bandits too

Big shout for Harold and Maude too. Hal Ashby was such a great director. Being There with Peter Sellers was another of his gems.

Indeed, Time Bandits must be one of the strangest films ever

I like Robin Williams a lot in the Fisher King although I can't say the same for most of the other movies he's played in. What happened to him? In the late 80s/early 90s, he got great roles in films such as fisher king, dead poets society, Awakenings .. Then it seems he suddenly only plays in movies like Mrs. Doubtfire, Flubber and Bicentennial Man.

When he's good I think he's really good, but when he sucks? Man how he blows in The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen.
