Red Dwarf Return

I don't know if you peeps in the U.S and Europe are familiar with this show but it's a cult classic that's been off our screens for a number of years. It's back over on cable channel Dave for a 3 part special. I so hope this will work but I can't help but be skeptical. The show that gaves us 'Smeg head' and 'smoke me a kipper i'll be back for breakfast'! Thoughts?

Apparently some of it's been filmed on the Coronation Street set & they meet Craig Charles's character from it.

I downloaded every season and started watching again about a month ago!

This should be interesting...I'd tune in were it possible.

LoathsomePete 03-31-2009 04:52 PM

Good to know, I use to watch reruns of this when I was younger and really enjoyed it. This is one of those shows I gotta pick up on DVD. I'm glad that it's coming back.

Comus 03-31-2009 05:13 PM

I love red dwarf, this should be epic.

mr dave 03-31-2009 05:37 PM

i remember going on a big kick at the end of last summer and watching the first 3 or 4 seasons in a week.

the last episodes i remember were starting to get pretty existential and metaphysical. lots of what ifs about time and alternate realities. like the time they went back to earth but everything was in reverse. or when Rimmer joined a ship full of super-intelligent holograms but could only join the crew by replacing someone from the crew, or the time he dressed up like pipi longstockings in a weird 'saw' like episode.

i don't recognize the woman in the cast so that should be indicative enough of how much i've actually seen.

the outro song still gets stuck in my head too

Red Dwarf is a beautiful thing. Now if only they would reunite The Young Ones......

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-03-2009 10:13 AM

The guy who played Mike in the young ones is 67 years old now

WTF, How?

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-03-2009 10:31 AM

He was 40 years old when they made the first series.

jackhammer 04-03-2009 11:41 AM

I used to think he was great as Dave Hedgehog in Bottom too.

SATCHMO 04-03-2009 11:46 AM

I'm no purveyor of all things british, but put me on an island w/ an ounce of "oregano" two packages of oreos, some milk, and a couple seasons of The young ones and I just may be live happily for 2-3 days.

Have you not seen 'Bottom'?

SATCHMO 04-03-2009 11:51 AM

That just seriously ****s w/ my reality!

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-03-2009 11:57 AM

This is my favourite Bottom clip

Mojo 04-03-2009 12:06 PM

That Bottom clip is hilarious. I haven't seen it in years and don't remember that one.

I'm the same with Red Dwarf. There were probably two or three seasons towards the end I didn't see and i've been wondering whether I should start at the beginning again first or just watch the new ones anyway.

SATCHMO 04-03-2009 01:06 PM

I'm so stocking up on British sit-coms!

jackhammer 04-03-2009 01:12 PM

This still does it for me for classic Bottom:

SATCHMO 04-03-2009 01:20 PM

So when did Bottom start running? Are they still producing it?

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-03-2009 01:22 PM

They made 3 series in the early 90s. They also made 5 stage shows which were all released on video.

They wrote a 4th series but the BBC never commissioned it.

jackhammer 04-03-2009 01:30 PM

Should rename the thread 'Bottom appreciation thread' but it may attract the wrong crowd :D

SATCHMO 04-03-2009 01:56 PM

I'm going to be hunting relentlessly for this show!

Mojo 04-03-2009 03:24 PM

I didnt realise they had written another series! I wont go into detail because I would hate someone telling me how a show ended but I seem to remember Bottom had a very definitive 'ending'. So, that wasnt planned?

The stage shows were good. Fairly unprofessional at times but then again with Bottom that didnt really seem to matter. The fact that they were semingly unorganised gave them a certain charm I felt.

jackhammer 04-10-2009 11:08 AM

*giggle*

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-11-2009 08:42 AM

The first episode was pretty good. The cast seemed to slip into character straight away after such a long time away , and getting rid of Kochanski & just having the original 4 was a good idea.

~BUT

Whoever made the decision of making this 3 episodes should be shot. It's quite obvious to anyone watching this was made as a 90 minute special and the decision to split into 3 parts was taken at the last minute. There was no build up , no suspense & the pacing was totally wrong for a 30 minute episode. It just stopped when it got to 30 minutes.

jackhammer 04-12-2009 05:50 AM

I haven't watched them yet. I'm going to watch all three in one sitting so hopefully the pacing won't be a problem then.

Molecules 04-12-2009 07:12 AM

fudgenuts. Completely forgot about this. Are they still doing this live performance thing I vaguely remember hearing about?

Glad they got rid of Kochanski, she was always crap. Because there's only on Claire Grogan...

Molecules 04-14-2009 12:32 PM

after weighing up the pluses and minuses of the new episodes, I'd tentatively welcome a new series. Not nearly enough laughs (having trouble thinking of any tbh), it was really just a big nod to the fans but I'm told they are gunning for more episodes off the back of it

Mojo 04-15-2009 06:34 AM

I am looking at it as one long episode overall and overall it wasnt too bad I guess. It wasn't what I was expecting and it was more inventive than I thought it would be. I'm not entirely convinced however, after watching the "first" episode I was massively disappointed. It was ****. The other two at least seemed to make the first one worthwhile.
