I forgot to mention.
Obnoxious, unlikable characters, a whole cast that seems to be having a contest for who can chew the most scenery (Broadbent was the only performance I really liked), unnecessary modern pop culture references and probably the worst editing I've ever seen in a feature film. And despite the over the top presentation of it, it still manages to be boring. It had it's moments sure, and the visuals were amazing, but good luck ever getting a real good look at anything because the editor clearly suffers from a severe case of ADD as he's compelled to make a pointless jump cut every 5 milliseconds. I guess techniques like that are supposed to be edgy or something, but it just renders the whole film completely unwatchable. |

I understand that some people don't like it but saying it's like a TV movie is just mean.
Mainly because unlike any TV movie I've ever seen, it's actually well acted and well made. |

I thought Romper Stomper was a way better neo-nazi movie. |

I don't think there is ANY greatness in the first two. But Good Will Hunting is a really good movie, can't see how you were able to put it next to the those other two.

For what Baz Luhrmann sets out to achieve I really don't think his stuff (Moulin Rouge, Australia) is that bad. He's obviously obsessed with romanticism so of course his stuff is going to be over the top and overly theatrical because that is pretty much what encapsulates romanticism.
I thought Moulin Rouge was very quirky and visually interesting... the storyline and characters were very typical and uninventive but in terms of cinematic and production techniques I thought it was pretty good. The editing WAS a bit tedious in parts but when watching the film I knew in the back of my mind that it is very characteristic of Luhrmann to have very over the top editing so I could deal with it. As for Australia, being an Australian I don't think anyone who ISN'T Australian could really appreciate it for what it is and the symbolism it holds in terms of the indigenous citizens. I have to admit it angered me and made me feel a little bit nauseated due to the extreme portrayal of Australia and Australians... it was very corny and very ridiculous. But then again, like I said, that is typical of Luhrmann... trying to bring back romanticism and thus being very theatrical and very over the top. I also don't think his films ARE overrated because to be honest I have rarely come across anybody who really likes his stuff... ha. |
