#2 Ghost World (2001)

Do me a favour. A film that bored from start to finish with it's 'kooky' ousiders, typical middle aged nerd, droll music and lazy direction. It didn't make me smile once and the female characters annoyed me. Steve Buscemi phones in his performance as leftovers from the very similar middle aged character he played in 'Trees lounge'.

Playing a trick on a middle aged man and then seemingly trying to make amends must have been the highlight of their graduation and I should imagine is what everyone wants to do when leaving school. I really dislike 'kooky' films. If you want to watch teenagers and their dissatisfaction with life then watch 'Heathers' or 'Pump Up The Volume'. Hell even 'Mallrats' with it's peurile humour had more emotional investment.

about an hour and a half of sub-par pithy dialogue/fart jokes, as well as sharing the distinction of trying to cash in on knocked up and 40 year old virgin's successes.

if you look at apatow's past movies and compare them to the present, you see a huge difference in quality. Kicking and Screaming, Talladega Nights, Anchorman, etc, were all very well written and acted, usually with subtle or dry humor. His latest showings are like someone gave a ****load of money to a bunch of seventh graders and said "make a movie about what you think is funny."

I was going to say "a fat guy with curly hair", but sure, that works too.

LOL. What. Kicking and Screaming and Talladega Nights were awful.

Never underestimated the power of indie for the mass appeal.

Blah, I really love that film and it's far superior to all the films you're comparing it to.

Birch and Buscemi really made that movie for me.

We seem to diametrically opposed on films for sure. Heathers is a delicious satire of the vacuousness of high school popularity and Christain Slater has never been better. Have you seen 'Trees Longue' with Buscemi? you will see what I mean about the performance.

I really dislike Christian Slater so there you go.

His acting in Alone in the Dark is hardly even Ed Wood worthy.

I think I've seen parts of Trees Longue on IFC but not the whole thing, however I know Buscemi's character in Ghost World is a typical role for him, he is after all a character actor.

He's like the number 2 go to guy for playing dorky/cynical/obnoxious characters, Paul Giamatti being number 1 of course.

jackhammer 03-01-2009 01:57 PM

I agree about Slater but he fits for Heathers so well. Giamatti is brilliant in American Splendor which IS a kooky movie i can handle!

I liked Splender.

But I liked Ghost World more. :)
