Firefly

anybody here a fan? I can't imagine how it could be canceled (Yeh, I know it's been 6 years and all...), I still don't know who Shepherd Book really is, Mal and anara still haven't hooked up, and I know Whedon had a hella of a lot more plot twists left than what he put in the movie.

That was a great show. I never saw it when it was originally broadcast, but I just watched the whole series on Hulu a couple months ago and really got into it.

Same here, better than his vampire shows and considering how mediocre Dollhouse is looking, better than that too.

Janszoon 02-14-2009 11:14 PM

Have you watched Serenity yet?

ProggyMan 02-14-2009 11:24 PM

Saw it before I saw the show, watched it over today, much, much better when you get the characters.

Heh. Yeah, I can't even imagine what it would've been like if I hadn't seen the show.

I watched Serenity first, and it felt like it came out of nowhere so I bought the TV boxset (big jump, buying a boxset of a tv show I'd never heard of) and fell head over heels for the show.

The shows cancellation is one of the biggest tragedies of television. And Dollhouse is kinda meh right now, I guess because Fox is trying to take the Whedon quality from it, trying to make it the next 24... with sci-fi.

And Buffy was kind of awesome. The themes that that show dealt with are mind bogglingly dense. Whedon took a ****ty premise and made it into something people could philosophize about.

And then Season 6 came along and I felt like barfing all over everyone involved with the show.

Whedon kinda pisses me off nowadays. A genius for character... but the decisions he makes... my god.

I've seen the last few Buffy seasons, wasn't impressed at all, but now I'm starting season 1.

This is exactly why Buffy is one of my favorite series. I think you really have to watch it from the beginning to appreciate it though.

I love Firefly too, but we don't really get a chance to see how deep into the characters it could have become, due to its cancellation. I'm really glad they made Serenity, though. Even though the show got canceled, at least we got that.

Don't know how I feel about Dollhouse yet. I think it's still too early to judge, since there's only been the one episode.

Xena is the only show that I miss.

adidasss 02-15-2009 06:28 PM

First I saw some bits and pieces of the show and thought it was awful (sci-fi western, um, no!). Then I saw Serenity and thought it was the best goddamn sci-fi film I've seen in years (dunno what you guys are talking about, it can totally stand on its own). So I decided to go back to the show, and was thrilled by it. Then I watched Serenity again over the holidays stoned and decided it's one of the smartest films I've ever seen. Whedon is a freakin' genius.

Oh and Buffy was really great, primarily because of the humor.

ProggyMan 02-15-2009 08:22 PM

I thought the movie was good, I just was blown away by it after seeing the show, which I hadn't been at first watch. To be fair I saw it at a party, so who knows...
P.S.
Is that James Franco in your avatar adidass?

adidasss 02-16-2009 02:37 AM

Indeed...<3

Great show. Tragedy that the cancelled it.

Of topic slightly but I am a huge fan of Lexx. I know that it is not as serious as Firefly but still find it oddly riveting.

FreddeGredde 02-16-2009 03:36 PM

Really liked the show even though I generally don't like sci-fi! The movie was like a straight continuation/ending, so it was also great. ^^

I've tried Buffy though since some people have said that it's good in a similar way, but I just can't stand it. =/ It's just too cheesy/dorky/teens/90's. It's impossible to take it seriously, even though I *know* it supposedly gets better and deeper, and that it's got a great mythology/story.

Oh well. :)

ProggyMan 02-16-2009 04:13 PM

Same experience here with Buffy so far. Hulu only has the 1 and 2nd seasons, any other good places to watch it online?

garbanzo 02-28-2009 11:45 AM

Firefly is absolutely amazing. Whedon did such a fantastic job creating full, rich characters in just a few episodes. needless to say, i was devestated when it was cancelled. then along came Serenety - a very forced closure that really didn't tie up any of the interesting loose ends. he just killed off half the characters and called it good. what a sad, sorry ending to what could have been the best show on TV for many years running.

i'm a huge Buffy fan as well. i've got all seasons on DVD, and i've watched through them at least five times. i even like the later seasons. it's great from beginning to end.

never saw a single episode of Angel. he and Cordelia were some of my least favorite characters from Buffy, so i had no desire to follow their story. though i really do enjoy Boreanaz in Bones, which i watch every week!

then there's Dollhouse. Dushku always put me off in Buffy, but i was still thrilled to experience another Whedon project. i grabbed the first episode the night it aired - what a disappointment! it was so damned superficial. seemed completely different from his other shows. i have not been able to bring myself around to watch any more episodes. does it get any better? do the characters develop to the point where you can tell them apart? do you actually begin to care about what happens to them?
