Alright, if the crime ones don't necessarily have to be gangster movies, here are my lists:

Crime
Pulp Fiction
Fargo
Bottlerocket
Menace II Society
Snatch

SciFi
Dark City
A Scanner Darkly
Primer
The Matrix
Pi

RezZ: That's reasonable.

Jans: Great Crime list, totally forgot Bottle Rocket.

Had to use the web to remember what I'd seen, this was hard.. And it's all the usual suspects I'm afraid because in your heart of hearts you know they're the best

Gangster (not crime):

1. Goodfellas (Casino is underrated and great but just an inferior version of this really)
2. Godfather II (utterly fed up of the first one now, either I've seen it too many times or it's just boring compared to this, where it all kicks off)
3. Miller's Crossing (just great. Looks terrific, great script, Irish people going bananas)
4. Hard Boiled (aaaaarrrrggghhh)
5. the Departed (preferred this to Infernal Affairs, though I've not seen it in years)

Honourary mentions: Snatch and Donnie Brasco, Menace II Society (more in the 'south central small-time gee' genre and much better than Boyz N Tha Hood)

Sci-fi (not fantasy):

1. Alien (it's bloody Alien)
2. Blade Runner (Not the theatrical cut with the Hollywood ending obviously)
3. Brazil (1984 'cinematized' properly, has fantasy elements)
4. Akira (Testsuooooooo!!!)
5. Escape From New York (where Metal Gear Solid got most of it's ideas)

Special mention: too many, the Terminator, the Thing (1982), Transformers (shutup) and that's just the ones beginning with 't'.

EDIT: aaaaaaah! I forgot the Long Good Friday in gangster. Swap it for Hard Boiled
EDIT again: just noticed the '90's onwards' bit. oops. what are you 12?

Buffering this now. I'm sorry but Strange Days was laughable!

Might write another list but I'm having trouble remembering films that haven't been mentioned. Cube is great, and Pitch Black is also underrated in the sci-fi horror canon I think. As is the Solaris remake

Great little film ain't it. Actually lives up to its interesting premise, which is pretty rare for modern horror-styled movies like that.

Love these...

I have to admit to being something of a Star Trek fan...I'm completely psyched about the new movie coming out this year, even though it's like the 43rd movie they've come out with (or something like that).

That film scared the living crap out of me when I was a kid. Apparently the movie was supposed to be longer and way more violent but the powers that be wanted some of the violence cut and the original tapes were destroyed. I'd be interested to have seen a directors cut of the movie to see how much more violent the film could have been as it's pretty god damn violent as it is.

It's weird, I've met a lot of people who absolutely hate Event Horizon, but I think it's really good. It's nice to see so many fans here.

I rate it too. Certainly Anderson's best film by far.
