True Detective

So I watched the season 2 premiere last night and while it was a solid effort with a lot going for it, they seemed to have put the mystery on hold for this episode to instead focus on our 3 miserable protagonists. There was some real nice cinematography going on and I loved the dirty and industrialized view of California that you so rarely see. The acting was top notch and the writing was HBO caliber and I suspect this will help reestablish the careers of Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell and maybe even finally launch Taylor Kitsch into something worth a damn. Story wise, it was a little predictable and by saving the crime scene that brings the 3 protagonists together till the very end did help build intrigue for later episodes, but for an opener it didn't leave much to chew on besides guessing why all 3 main characters are so fucked up and who will be redeemed by the end of the series. I'm really hoping for a continuation of the Lovecraftian horror elements and themes from season 1 though, and we really didn't get that in last nights episode.

All that being said, there's a moment where Colin Farrell's character is beating the shit out of a 12 year old kid's dad right in front of him and says that he'll "butt fuck his dad with his moms headless corpse". To me that's worth the price of admission alone.

Looking forward to the next episode as I really have no idea what is going on at this point. I do like the feel of it so far. The main characters are all so ****ed up. Great soundtrack too. Nick Cave doing "All the gold in California" was a surprise. I remember hearing the original growing up but his version is so different. Don' t think they can top Season 1 but a good start overall.

Watched this the other night. Absolutely flawless.

One of the saddest things I've ever seen. I can't usually sit through films either but this was excellent.

I haven't watched any TV since January or something, so I'm catching up on my trashy pop culture by watching the last couple months of TMZ episodes. Classin' it up in this bitch. God I love this show. Too bad Max is gone.

As pretentious as I am, I kinda love it whenever one of my drinking buddies throws that show on.

Of course you like TMZ. It's just a bunch of camera whores being mean spirited douchebags toward annoying celebrities we already kind of hate. It's like the perfect job.

Frownland 07-01-2015 02:14 PM

We make it into a drinking game where you take a drink every time you're annoyed. As you get drunker it becomes infinitely more entertaining and you drink far less.

See, I'd never get drunk, cause where you're at at the end of your post, I'm already there.

Frownland 07-01-2015 02:21 PM

It's easy to get annoyed by the paparazzi's antics when you're as amazing as I am.

But as an *******, should you not recognize your own people when you see them?

Nah I still don't like you.

Depends on how much I've had to drink up until that point.

Just finished up Season One of True Detective after a 4 episode binge today.

The final episode made Silence of the Lambs and Se7en seem like Sesame Street by comparison.

So blown away.

I thought the ending was terrible. Apart from that probably the best series ever.

Yeah, and when they're outside.

The whole happy ending with his "revelation" seemed tacked on and lazy.

Overcast 07-03-2015 11:34 PM

Started on some shows today since getting back:

Wayward Pines (very interesting twin peaksy feel at the start but I'm not sure what to make of it now, could be good or could be bad it's aiming for a lot a bit too much perhaps... some mystery still lingers but so far it's been predictable for me and the characters somewhat idiotic)
Alone (survival challenge TV show featuring some youtubers I watch, loving it)
Humans (human robot show, worth the watch so far)
The Wire (seen season 1 before but I'm rewatching now)
Zoo (starting on this next)

True Detective will be on my watch list as well.

The Batlord 07-04-2015 05:20 AM

Figured I'd start True Detective before you *******s talked about it to the point I didn't even want to watch it anymore. Loved it. And how good is the ending theme? Gonna check that band out like a mother****er.

Such a great series. Rust is the best character I have seen on TV.

It's a great cast all around so far, but Rust may very well be creating all the tension and intensity in the series all by himself. Of course I'm only halfway through the second episode.

The scene at the end of episode 4 with the single camera tracking Rust is ridiculous.

Makes me wish S2 wasn't such a pile. The show really misses it's S1 director.

Ep 4 goes hard like a mother****er.

Amazing show. Learned new respect for McConaughey. Loved the them song for season 1 by the handsome family. I'll give season 2 a chance. Vince Vaughn seems like an interesting character. Certainly not grabbing me like season 1 but better than most the **** out right now.

Season 2 of True Drunk is good. However if you are triggered by the cast being hammered 24/7 then don't watch it. But other than that no complaints.

I just binged all the way up to the latest episode and...

Spoiler for spoilers:
If I hadn't been looking at the beginning credits of the 1st ep of season 2, I would have been totally confused that there was a completely new cast. I honestly don't know why it's even the same show. I have to assume that the shotgun dude with the crow mask at the end of ep 2 is somehow connected to the animal masks from the first season, or else these are two different shows.

So far it's cool and all, but there's no character as compelling as Rust, the urban setting isn't nearly as amazing as Louisiana, and I'm dubious that the story is going to be anywhere near as engaging as season 1. I'll give it time, but for the time being, season 1 was a mini-series and season 2 is completely unaffiliated, or else I'm just going to ruin it by comparing the two.

Chula Vista 07-05-2015 07:27 AM

How about your take on season one as a whole? What did you think of the finale? So many great scenes but how about Woody's acting when Rust first shows him the VHS tape in the storage shed?

Spoiler for spoiler:
Fantabulous. I watched the entire thing in a day, so it really felt like one long movie. "Intense" would be the word I would use if I could only use one.

And I'm actually happy I knew about the weird fiction connection going in, cause I was always in Lovecraft mode while watching it. Rust almost felt like a Lovecraft protagonist after he'd seen something that he wasn't supposed to: broken, nihilistic, and with a crushing sense of his own tiny place in the universe.

The VHS tape was some great weird fiction-style horror as well. Just enough to be creepy, but in the end it tells you nothing and let's your imagination horrify itself.

Even Louisiana was a perfect setting. It had that same kind of desolate, isolated, creepy atmosphere as the kinds of New England ****holes that a Lovecraft story always takes place in.

Really cool read here:

True Detective?s Glenn Fleshler on Playing Errol -- Vulture

Huge Lovecraft fan. Didn't make the connection until you mentioned it. Nice!

Technically not Lovecraft, but adjacent.
