Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams
Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams (TV Series 2017
I used to read a lot of his short stories when I was a teen. I loved them and to a large extent, they shaped me.
I only saw the pilot so far, and every episode is a self contained story, so I can't really judge fully, but...
This tv series.. it's not for everybody.
The pilot episode made it very clear to me. I loved it, but I sort of knew what I was getting into.
Visually it was.. well, stunning is not the right word, but it was really powerful - a dirty, concrete dystopian future full of angry people, class divide and poverty. A dirty, broken world.
The episode tells a story of a duo of government workers in this world - a police detective and a telepath assigned to help him, in a city on the brink of a revolution of some sorts. I won't spoil the story though, so that's all I'm gonna write about it.
Here's a link to a lovely shot from the episode, it's a bit too big to paste it directly.
Now, why is it not for everybody ? I saw folks raging in the comments section of imdb about it, so I know it's an issue. Thing is, these stories were written many decades ago. A ton of popular sf, movies etc are based on the ideas Dick had. This might suggest these plots are unoriginal or shallow even, when in fact quite often they are the idea in the form it appeared. If the series follows in the footsteps of the pilot, and I don't see why not, they will have fairly simple plots. In my eyes, that's not really a problem - as long as they're executed well, and again, judging by what I saw, they should be.
8/10 so far, it's something different.
