Now that I've watched all of "The Newsroom", one of the best lines: Maggie and Will ---
Maggie: "When you asked me to send flowers to (can't remember who) whose wife had just died. And I put "sorry for your loss LOL". Will: "You put LOL???" Maggie: "I thought it stood for Lots of Love!" I can just picture it! :D Working my way through "Hell on wheels" now, love it so far. |
Got the first 2 seasons of The Wire.
Well... Seeing what the fuss is about, review so far: Despite taking a while for the plot to set in, one great thing about this show is that the characters are very involved, not black and white good/bad guys, but both sides have shades of grey. Unlike those judicial robotic detectives you see in a lot of other criminology tv shows. Although the missions seem impossible to crack they continuously reproach ways to dig out their alibi. Of course, ultimately it leads up to installing the most complex wire-taps within public phones suspiciously used in the world of drug trade, coding and figuring out real identities of these incognitos that keeps you guessing along side. It also gives some sort of an understanding of the culture surrounding this show. It's quite attentive and detailed from both ends, and somehow they muddle up and work together while still aiming towards their own goals. This show is starting to become addictive the more it goes, and I'm only around 3/4 of the first season. Guess it deserves the praise so far. |

Did anybody see the Conan O'Brien show on Thursday? He said that if a certain amount was raised for charity, he would do this:

Hey Jansz! Made it through the hurricane, I'm glad to see. I'm trying to establish that we're all ok via the HS thread but no replies yet. Do you know if any of the other guys had any problems or did everyone make it through (fingers crossed)?

Still making my way through Game of Thrones, I've heard good things about Broadwalk Empire. I will happily recommend Arrested Development to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Over the past month I've been watching Breaking Bad, from the first episode of season 1 to the mid-finale of season 5. It may well be the greatest thing I've ever seen. If anyone's considering watching it, take my word for it and watch it now.
|
I've been watching episodes of The Venture Bros. out of order just to see if I can catch any continuity errors, but besides one joke about one of the Venture Bros. being circumcised while the other isn't, I can't find any. This show has done a magnificent job at world building, which is pretty impressive considering they almost never know if they'll be renewed for another season, which is why there's usually a 2-3 year wait between seasons. Definitely one of the more underrated animated shows out there.

http://img21.otofotki.pl/obrazki/yi9...od-okladka.jpg I've started watching Deadwood... and must say, along with Band of Brothers it's the best tv series I've seen. I'm about halfway through and so far it's only getting better. Most of the characters are authentic, the Gem saloon in deadwood was a real place etc - so don't spoil the series for yourself like I did by reading wiki biographies of Bullock or Calamity Jane. Also, Ian McShane has created I believe the best "bad guy" I've seen on tv. If you don't mind the setting, Deadwood is a very well made, fast paced story about a town full of degenerates and bastards and its transformation to a more civilized place. Throw in a bunch of very memorable characters and a ton of plot twists and it's no wonder the show gets 9/10 on IMDB. Plus since all episodes are already out, you can watch them till you puke. |
I really enjoyed Deadwood too, but it's nowhere near as good the second time around.

WHY am I continuing to watch "House of lies"?? I hate all the characters, hate the idea that they're so smug about ripping people off (albeit large corporations who can afford it) by basically doing nothing and charging the earth, and I especially hate that little ****er with the big hair and nose who thinks he's god's gift to women. Even the girl is annoying, although she did stand up for herself in the last episode I watched.
And it may BE the last episode: I'm seriously thinking of not recording anymore. About the only sympathetic character in it is the tranny son, who is funny and it's certainly interesting to see such issues explored, especially with a kid. But I'm not sure that's enough to keep me watching. Plus the stories are awful. Anyone else watching this? |

I saw the first season, and I agree, it's bad. I have a weakness for snazzily made premium channel dramedies.

I don't know how you could have them on there without seeing them. Actually, I do because seasons 1 and 2, while excellent in their own right, aren't fit to wipe the bums of the last three seasons. |

Is anybody watching American Horror Story? Nice campy fun. The first season was all over the place, but towards the end it became really silly (and not in a good way). This new season, Asylum, may be even more over the top, and gory (we have mad house cliches, demonic possession, zombies, mad Nazi scientist, aliens, 'slutty nuns', serial killer, what else?...), but it somehow works for now. I hope the story arc is going opposite of the first season, from over the top to more focus. Anyway, I like it. It's fun. |

Outnumbered, season 4. The kids have grown up a little but the show is still hilarious and cute.
Dexter, season 7, is going strong. Love it. Last of the Summer Wine, finished watching season 18. Bye Foggy, still a season and a bit for Compo. A priceless sitcom. |

Bit underwhelemed if I'm honest. I mean, it's a decent story but essentially it's a cop/action show with links to sf elements. The theme, at its heart, is pretty basic: bad guys on the run from cop who intends to stop them destroying things, or in this case, manipulating events to change time. It started well in the future but then they all went back (!) to 2012, and since then although there have been some flashbacks to the future (if you know what I mean) most of it has been based in the present. It's okay, and enjoyable, but I don't get the hype it's being pushed by the SyFy Channel. Every time an episode ends the announcer drools in an annoyingly faux-excited voice "It just gets better and better, doesnt it?" Well, no, it doesn't. So far the premise is a bit flawed: the "terrorists" were painted in the first episode as noble freedom fighters, struggling against the grip of corporations who run the world, then suddenly once they went back in time they're evil, desperate, violent criminals who'll kill anyone to make their point. Spoiler for In case you haven't watched it yet:
I don't get why no-one will do an sf series either based in the future or in space; this is just a glorified cop show. It's sort of a mixture of V and The Terminator. I'm not saying I hate it, or that I wouldn't advise anyone to watch it, but I don't know: I just had expected more. Maybe it'll get better as it goes on, but I hope it's not one of those shows that ends on a cliffhanger and then gets cancelled... Or at this point, maybe I do? https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...ME1XNO_XaoLD1Q On a happier note, "The Booth at the End" is back! Season two begins on Monday! I didn't think we'd see anymore of this, and I'm delighted there's a new season. Yay! One of the most intelligently-written and thought-provoking series I've seen in a long time, just a pity it's so short: only five episodes in all. Miss it at your peril! |
Up to s4 of The Wire. Have to say it is still continually an awesome show but I prefer the Barksdale case to Stanfield. There's hardly any smart ambitious scheming in the Stanfield case and that's a big part of the reason it made the show so enjoyable. Only half way through s4 so still time to see how it goes...

I've started watching Breaking Bad. I think... I think I'm trapped.

You'll only get more and more addicted, believe me.

Survivors Pretty good BBC show about the survivors of a deadly global pandemic which unfortunately was cancelled after two seasons. It had its flaws (especially the very formulaic first half of the second season) but I thought it was decent overall. I would liked to have seen another season or two. |
I lost interest in "Survivors" after the first season. There were some good ideas there, but it really wasn't realistic or gritty enough. I mean, they all had perfect hair and makeup, come on! For a REAL look at the world after a catastrophe of that nature, check the original sixties series, also called "Survivors" and written by the late, great Terry Nation.
Just watched the premier of this, it certainly has potential, depending on where it goes from here. Quite gung-ho but not in a "24" way, almost the opposite in fact. I'll be watching how it develops, but for now I'm interested. (cue cancellation...) https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...FIR50FG8vMt3sw |

Well, just lost a ton (sorry blaro!) of material off my Sky box! Wanted to setup the On Demand feature, but due to some mixup over smart cards a new one had to be installed before the system would work, and this one refuses to see any of my recorded material. Well, not ALL of it, but a whole hell of a lot. So I've lost lots of programmes I never got to watch. Sigh.
On the plus side, I've gone from having 58% free to 91.... |
